Looks like it might be Eurybia spectabilis (showy aster) -- bracts on the back side of the flower head are diagnostic for asters (this pic taken in southeast MA)

nice -- it's rare in all the New England states & I've never seen it.

It's elderberry (Sambucus sp.), probably Sambucus racemosa (red-berried elder) since the berries are red, vs. Sambucus nigra (purplish-black) probably, but not sure, you need basal leaves for certain. (which are large = a few inches wide) The wand-shaped stalk (no branch-shaped flower clusters)...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

today's photograph bounty (all state-listed in NH): Rubus chamaemorus (cloudberry) -- berries weren't quite ripe yet, maybe another week or two. Arctostaphylos alpina (alpine bearberry) -- this one's too rare to eat the berries; the rain this year must have really helped because I can never...

I fought the grouse and the grouse won!

a similar thing happened to me a few years ago in Glacier National Park with an angry ptarmigan. I was more surprised than hurt.

    Garmin 60CSx discontinued

That's what I do. I'll take whatever accuracy I can get out of the system, the same way people who use trackpoints+interpolating will take whatever accuracy they can get out of that system. GPS absolute accuracy may be rated at 10m (what is it, 99% confidence <10m?), but in practical terms it's...

    Garmin 60CSx discontinued

I'd have to add this caveat, that if you are doing work that involves lots of stops and starts in a particular area, and a few meters difference is important, this technique won't work well. I've done botanical surveys where automatic synchronization of this type adds more confusion that it's...

    Garmin 60CSx discontinued

I feel your pain, I use my personal GPS for natural resource purposes for nonprofits, and it SUCKS that the GPS companies don't produce units that are usable for "real work" without paying thousands. The same isn't true for PCs or cameras. w/r/t geotagging photos: Take a look at the Panasonic...

    Garmin 60CSx discontinued

Hallelujah! It was particularly galling to see them spend some of their engineering effort on games instead of useful features.

    Garmin 60CSx discontinued

sigh. I hope the next GPS receiver I purchase has more features I want than the 76csx provides, rather than fewer.

    AMC Executive Director pay

That's not the only measure of an organization or of its president. With regards to the financial state of AMC, I have no doubt that their fundraising has brought in a lot of money, so kudos to Andy Falender in his leadership for that aspect of the Club. But I have misgivings both about AMC's...

    Isolation via Glen Boulder?

Glen Boulder route is beautiful. More work w/ verticals, but alpine zone for a few miles. (w/ some minor shrubby shelter between Glen Boulder and the junction w/ Davis Path) No water crossings. When I hiked Isolation, I came up via Glen Boulder and then down Rocky Branch (after finding a very...

    Mont Albert beta

I guess what I'm looking for is less an opinion on technical difficulty than on remoteness. I may be doing the hike alone, and I'm comfortable with that in the Presis, but if this area isn't commonly hiked and nobody in the area speaks English, then maybe it's out of my comfort zone.
