    Mont Albert beta

I need some feedback re: Mont Albert in the Gaspe. I haven't hiked in that area before and I need to relate it to my experiences in the Presidential Range. How does it compare w/r/t the trails around the Presidential Range in terms of - difficulty - bailout options / frequency-of-use I found...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Definitely Veronica spp., I think you've got the ID right. (Veronica officinalis and Veronica chamaedrys respectively) V. officinalis is an annoying weed in my yard. Grr.

OK, time to pull out my copy of Gleason vol 2... the yellow Geum spp in our area (aside from G. peckii which is alpine + not the one pictured) are: G. macrophyllum G. aleppicum G. urbanum (non-native, doubtful in such a remote area) G. vernum -- no bractlets (things clasping the stem in...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Yes on the chokecherry, but they're a bit tricky to distinguish. Current name of genus (at least per USDA PLANTS) is Photinia spp. -- taxonomy is annoying when "they" don't stop changing their minds. (used to be Aronia spp. and Pyrus spp.) I'd have to look up the differences between Photinia...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

It looks like similar Baptisia sp. but not Baptisia tinctoria, which has blooms midsummer, has small clover-like leaves with 3 leaflets, and is found in pitch-pine sandplains and dry oak-hickory forests, probably not found north of Manchester, NH. (Here's a photo of Baptisia tinctoria from Cape...

more specifically: leaves deciduous (azalea-group of Rhododendron spp. rather than the rhododendron-group which has evergreen leaves that remain on the plant, e.g. Rhododendron maximum) flowers w/ bilateral symmetry but unequal petals rather than radial symmetry (most other azaleas in this...

it's a mint (square stem + flower shape), not a Veronica sp. Looks like Glechoma hederacea (gill-over-the-ground) to me. Nice photos!

"unknown grass" = Carex sp., a sedge. These can defy ID by experts, some only identifiable when they go to seed....

Nice pics -- I am so envious! We wanted to travel down to the DC area but NJ was as far as $$$ and time allowed. The white flower after the buttercup is a Hydrophyllum sp., not sure which (USDA PLANTS lists H. canadense, H. virginianum, and H. macrophyllum), but w/o seeing the leaves it's tough...

Jason: your "can't remember these" are both Cardamine spp.; the first is Cardamine diphylla, the second is Cardamine concatenata (common in areas of VT, but rare in NH and ME; if anyone sees it there please report to the state natural heritage bureau)

    Trail Tools

you've missed mentioning the bark spud -- not something to be used for most trail maintenance tasks, but if you were building bridges out of logs, it's a good thing to help remove bark. I have fond memories of peeling bark off a freshly-cut sugar maple log + its damp wooden core, near Little...

even if it's last year's, thanks for posting... some of us here are going crazy because it still feels like winter. ----- On a slight tangent, I'm trying to start a botany Q&A site at stackexchange.com & it needs a bunch of people to follow it before it can be used. Please sign up at...

    Frazil Ice in NH?

we get frazil ice frequently in winter on the Merrimack River in Manchester below the Amoskeag Dam. I've always assumed it's because of the turbulence.

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

looks like it (Epipactis helleborine), I'm not sure how to describe recognition other than gestalt. the several stem leaves + size are probable, can't think of another orchid (besides ladyslippers which have larger flowers)
