    Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer

because DeLorme is in Maine and therefore clearly superior to the rest of the country :p or at least unique. I'm sure they've considered standardizing. (edit: oh, good! they've kept the Maine-style typography/cartography. Again, clearly superior. :D )

Tourists Feared Dead After Freak Acadia Wave

yikes! sounds like my fear of the ocean is well-founded (i'd never go someplace like that during a hurricane!)

    Canon S90

Just use aperture priority mode! It lets you set aperture. I have mine set to f/8 for plant pics (would go to f/11 or f/16 if I had a camera that could do so)

gear storage / good source for carabiner-like substances

that had occurred to me, i guess it makes sense, thanks :-) Somehow I had a yearning for some magical metal spring loop that I could connect directly with an aesthetically-pleasing clip! sound. OK, what knot is good to use, to tie two ends of a rope together to make a loop? I tried a sheet bend...

gear storage / good source for carabiner-like substances

I am trying to set up a gear area in my house... got a shelf from IKEA which has a bunch of 1/2" diameter rods, and I figured I would get some carabiners to hang backpacks + such from it. So they don't need to be real weight-bearing carabiners. But they do need to fit around a 1/2" diam rod, and...

Does "Inserted Images" in Trip Reports bother you ?

Pictures are great! But encourage users to insert small images (<320x240 perhaps), with links to larger versions of pictures elsewhere, for those interested.

    Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer

:( :( :( I fell in love with northern New England in part because of the Maine Atlas. I hope they don't use the same format as the other states; I've always thought the Maine Atlas's typography and color scheme looked more tasteful.

Hiking up Mt. Madison on NHPTV

ha! dunno what they're talking about w/r/t tall grass. Alpine flowers, well there is Minuartia groenlandica (mtn sandwort) nearby the hut. must be Diapensia somewhere around but what I remember is a little brook w/ lowland plants like buttercups etc. which wouldn't be able to compete there...

    black flies in August?!

Got quite a few bites around Sphinx Col on Saturday. Are the black flies persisting longer-than-normal this year because of the rain?

:D your rattlesnake-root pics are almost certainly Prenanthes boottii = Nabalus boottii: the white color (vs. yellow for P. nana and P. altissima) and large number (12+) ray flowers per head are key distinguishing features to clinch the ID. Leaves are "sagittate" or arrowhead-shaped, sort of...

Moriah & Shelburne-Moriah from the Wild River Wilderness 8/16/09

what a neat-looking dog! I've never seen one with tortoiseshell coloring. Shelburne Moriah is one of my favorites.

heh. little do they know... ;) you got the false hellebore (Veratrum viride) right. re "speedwell?": that's Epilobium sp., probably E. hornemannii. There's also Epilobium alpinum but it's supposed to be much rarer and the distinguishing features are subtle, something to do with the relative...

RT 16 north of Berlin closed

the innkeeper at Stark Village Inn told me there was a washout of the road in a place where there are natural springs, so to fix it requires some extra design / reconstruction / relocation work. south of Milan? I was told it was near the meadows of the Bofinger recreation area.

Mount Washington via Tuckerman Ravine and Lion's Head 2009-08-08

congrats! on a side note, is that a new sign at the summit?! I can't believe they used Helvetica lettering  What a contrast between this new sign and the one on Katahdin from 7summit's report.

    Pierce/Eisenhower/Whatever 8/8/09

neat TR + pics. plant IDs: the two yellow Asteraceae above treeline are *probably* both Solidago spp.; Packera spp. aren't alpines, at least not in this part of the world, and they tend to have leaves with sinuses. (Although I look at that "Packera" picture and the flowerheads do seem very...

    Parapet Trail

bleah, I agree with Dr. Wu. I took that trail when I hiked Mt Madison in 2005 just to explore... one of my least favorite trails that I've ever hiked in the Whites. It's lots and lots of rocks and it's not marked too well. edit: I'd hike the Pine Link Trail any day before the Parapet Trail.

Summer '09 Northeast Wild Edibles Thread

why do you assume they're domesticated? Different species of Vaccinium have different growth forms... V. angustifolium is the small wild blueberry, V. caesariense is a common highbush blueberry. Usually the highbush blueberries are around the edges of swamps, but it's not out of the question for...
