High Volatage Transmission Line Through Coos County

there's one already that runs through Monroe by Comerford Dam; my guess is that it would connect up to there. (there's a huge yard of high-voltage DC apparatus!)

not really... if in the WMNF (AT corridor counts since WMNF administers in NH), I can get you contact info for their forest botanist if you like. Genetic aberrations aren't uncommon in some species, I seem to remember that Trillium spp are one of them. I've seen occasional 5-petal bluets and...

Time for the 2009 Spring/Summer Flower Thread

btw, before I forget, if you are in NH or nearby, we have a nascent "NH Botanical Club", with a (low-traffic, minimal content) website. There's a companion mailing list on events, as well as stuff on the site that isn't visible unless you're marked as a member, so if you want to get on the...

I'll drag out Gleason & Cronquist if I have to, but I concur with nartreb. Trillium grandiflorum is also of questionable status in NH -- not on the NH rare list at this time, but I hang out around the professional botanist crowd in this state & I remember it came up in conversation that it's...

nice! fyi the "desert flower" looks like a Tradescantia. The next one after that, I don't know but it shouldn't be hard to find out, orange flowers are uncommon and it looks like something in the mustard or evening primrose families (parts in 4's). The white "Catskills violets?" is Viola...

Justice Souter to retire so he can spend more time hiking in New Hampshire!

a friend of mine has ranted that the papers can't seem to count the number of 4000-footers. Washington Post says 47. Wall Street Journal said 20, and then later corrected themselves, saying there were actually "about four dozen".

Looking for transportation info around Glacier/Canadian Rockies

fyi, Siyeh Pass and Grinnell Glacier and Hidden Lake were my favorite trails in Glacier NP. Siyeh has lots of alpine time, Grinnell Glacier is just spectacular, and Hidden Lake has lots of variety in terrain & views (and frequented by mountain goats) for a not-very-difficult trail. But almost...

Looking for transportation info around Glacier/Canadian Rockies

I think you'll find that the rental car folks in Kalispell are really nice. It's a small airport that depends a lot on tourists to Glacier NP. The lady at the Avis counter there was really helpful to help fix the problem I had with my car and found me another car to swap.

    GPS recommendations

I beg to differ. My experiences for GPS and digital cameras and MP3 CD players and audio recorders were all the same: when I first was on the lookout for one, I wanted one really bad, but I didn't have much of an idea of what was good or bad, or even exactly how I would make use of them, until...

    GPS recommendations

If this is a first GPS, you should take a lot of time to figure out the features you like/dislike/need/don't care about, and the best way to do this is to actually use one. I'd recommend either: Beg and plead a friend to borrow one for a while (maybe they have an older model they're not using)...

    Digital SLR suggestions wanted

I am ogling the Panasonic DMC-G1 or DMC-GH1... not truly an SLR since they got rid of the pentaprism and are using an electronic eyepiece display (w/ 1.4 megapixels!!!). I currently have a 4-yr-old Panasonic FZ20 (not an SLR but it is a "prosumer" super-zoom with a 12:1 range) which has been...

Looking for transportation info around Glacier/Canadian Rockies

I would definitely concur. I visited Glacier last summer and rented from Avis in Spokane, then drove to Glacier, Waterton Lakes, and visited some places in SE British Columbia before returning to Spokane. A 2-wk rental cost me I think $600. I used a coupon code but can't remember where I got...

Digital field guide to trees and leaves

Interesting. This would be useful for narrowing down preliminary choices of species. As a definite answer it's probably not practical. The example used in the photo is kind of an ironic one: it's very easy to determine from leaf shape that a tree is an oak (Quercus sp.), but often very difficult...

Time for the 2009 Spring/Summer Flower Thread

of course, DNA is just like source code, a mutation somewhere caused the "3" to change to a "4". :D It would be a lot more confusing if there were 4 petals and 3 sepals and 3 leaves.

Time for the 2009 Spring/Summer Flower Thread

Thalictrum thalictroides (rue anemone) Crataegus sp. (hawthorn) -- that's as specific as I go. The one on the right may be a different species then the one on the left; I have no idea. There are an indeterminately large number of species in this genus, probably as many as the number of...
