Only three waterbars?? That trail has well over 50 - I lost count at some point the other day! You have to clear at least ten before you get any soul! :)) And, I seem to remember cutting down 30 or so blowdowns on somebody's trail a few weeks ago.... hmmm :))) PS - thanks for the great work...

    Alpine Flowers

Just a heads-up; yesterday on Eisenhower, the alpine flowers were approaching full bloom. Diapensia were halfway there, but the lapland rosebay and alpine azalea seemed to be in full color. Should be really nice this weekend and next.

Nameless Destinations near Mt. Moriah in the Carter Range (February 2011)

John, that is such a great report and photos! It brought back to me many fond memories of exploring that area a few years back. The Moriah Brook valley is such a beautiful place with so many hidden gems. Thank you for sharing a few of them with us! From the descriptions in your report, you...

    Macro photography on a budget

I haven't tried tubes since my old film SLR - I'll have to give that a try sometime. For my extreme low-budget macro flower photography, I've been using a $50 Raynox Macro conversion lens. Snaps right on the front of my zoom lens very quickly so I can switch between far and near on the fly...

Wal Mart Poles vs the Expensive Stuff

I've gone through 3 pairs of "Ocean State Job Lot" poles ($10 each) in about 3 years. You definitely get what you pay for - mine were fine in the summer but busted in the winter. First thing to go is the little knob that adjusts the pole length - soon you find yourself leaning to one side or...

    Summit forecasts

I never realized that! I've always tried to figure a rough average between the "High Peak" forecast and the valley forecast. Thank you for that information!

A Reflection On the Mountains We All Love

Thanks for posting that quote - it is so very true. These little mountains contain much, much more than meets the casual observer's eye. I read Good Morning Midnight last year. I thought it a very interesting book, though the author seemed to get a bit caught up in his own philosophy and...

favorite/most convenient town in the Whites ?

I vote Bethlehem, of course! :D Quiet solitude tucked inside the WMNF... with the benefit of local restaurants and store. A ten-minute drive takes you to civilization with it's Wal-marts and fast food restaurants. And, just about any White Mountain hiking trail, from the Kilkenny/Nash Stream...
