    Question about Newbie Winter Hiking

Go for It! I have only been doing winter hiking for a couple of years, and immediately started doing solo trips, some even a bit over my level of training/fitness (probably not the best idea). Being prepared for the worst, and being able to stay put for the night is the first consideration in...

To tired to enjoy the views?

I like Neil's approach Fortunately we have that 300 foot hill nearby too, because with all of the work I am doing this Christmas season--which consists entirely of cooking, eating and drinking (don't worry, this stuff is charcoal filtered)--even The Blue Hills are looking pretty challenging...

    Alligator eggs

A chef for the next gathering? Gris, I guess you'll just have to turn us on to this dish.

    Alligator eggs

So there I am, lurking in the elevator lobby I had spotted the VFTT sticker, so it had to be somebody, but it was a somebody I did not recognize, and what was taking so long? I figured my furtive glancing in her direction got her nervous, so she was fishing her knife out of the trunk. But...

    Clearing blowdown

Exciting Tales of Liability! As a lawyer following this thread closely, you can imagine how the subject of liability has my starter-cord-grabbing hand itching too. Just think of the possiblities! The Big Guy--or Gal--upstairs plants a tree, which grows then dies, then He/She intelligently...

    "Daredevil gene called big break"

Fear Genes and such I saw that article too. Unfortunately (I speculate) the first products of this tinkering will probably be military, but those of us looking for a little daredevil boost just before we go over the edge will probably benefit eventually when they release the hormones and drugs...

    MSR's new Lightning Ascents

Thumbs up for the Lightning Ascents I liked the concept -- that vertical frame components with all of their 360 degree grippiness -- and bought a pair early last season. I used them a fair amount (as often as possible, but then again there was not a lot of snow in January) and thought they were...

Large format mountain photos or prints???

Photo as wallpaper I have a big wall that I would like to cover in a giant print, not just a framed one. The copy shops will do the mega-blow-up. That way I can lean back at my desk and feel like I'm on top of Jackson, looking over the ravines towards Mt. Washington, all I need is the cold...

    Canada-US border wait time

Speaking of passports I saw in the news yesterday they will be requiring RFID chips in all new US passports sometime late in '06 and for renewals of expiring passports after that time as well. If you are freaked out by data collectors, you might want to get your passport sooner rather than later.

    Jefferson SAR in progress

Dreaded Ham Radio Comment I've been late a couple of times. The folks at home have a low tolerance for lateness and when they freak out the first thing they think of is calling in the SAR. It really is embarassing to have to call off the troops just 15 minutes later (fortunately they have never...

    Canada-US border wait time

Crossing into Quebec With my daughter at McGill, I have had the great pleasure of doing the border crossing with some regularity. We discovered the always empty crossing at Route 11, Rouses Point, NY. If you are coming from Vermont, as you hit NY, take that first right and you are right there...

    Confusing Tripyramids sign

That Sign is Confusing You are not alone. When we did the loop (following the intended route) last year, we passed someone who had gone up South instead of the North Slide. (She was going to descend the North Slide, which we vigorously discouraged.) The sign is confusing.

    VFTT Secret Sign

Papa Bear's Method with the fanny pack up front . . . I like the creative use of patch, but doesn't this encourage a lot of crotch staring? Would one stranger rather hear "aligator egg" from another stranger on the trail, or have them staring at their crotch trying to read a patch?

    Eagle Slide - Giant

Go for it! This is a great route. Granted I did it a long long time ago, before adult sensibilities fully took hold, but I'd go back. As mentioned in the other thread, there is a nice route desciption at the summitpost.org for Giant. Good luck!

Biking from Adk Loj to Keene Valley?

You'll love the hill I've done this route in the opposite direction, and chatted with some who have gone down the hill in the direction you're traveling. Look for speeds up to 50 mph! I think you should be fine, since a lot of it is three lanes so cars should have room to pass, assuming they...

    Options hiking the Kinsmans

I second that emotion I don't know about coming down Fishin' Jimmy, but going up the route TDawg laid out is one of the prettiest hikes I know. Kinsman Pond Trail is little used and deliciously wild. I believe this is where the color green was invented.

Water - to treat or not to treat

Can't resist a stream! I always bring tap water, but even when well stocked I find it hard to resist a little stream fresh out of some rocky outcropping. I avoid larger streams because I think the odds get worse on the Giardia. I believe that the Atkins diet was originally the ADKIns diet, or...

    Shoe Box Falls

You were pretty close I've been there once. If you had crossed the river right where you turned back, and continued up the other side, you probably would have gotten there in 5-10 minutes. (We went up and over that high bank, but took the low road on the way home.) There really isn't much of a...

Jewel Bridge out - how bad is the crossing

Take the bridge on the Jewel trail Walked it last Sunday. It's on its side, 100 feet downstream, so instead of the top of the bridge you are walking on an outside stringer. If it were really wet it might be a little slippery, but otherwise don't give it a thought. Some thoughtful person has...
