    Skylight and Gray

Is the sign still there on Gray? I can just imagine bumbling around in the brush, wondering if I was actually "there" if there were no sign. (And if there weren't I'd found out later I wasn't.)

    self test for dehydration

Other Use for Pinch Test The pinch test a good way to identify aliens as well. If the skin changes color or breaks off in scales, you are an alien. If you haven't peed in a few hours you might have a great bladder, but you are probably also dehydrating. If you haven't gone in about 8 hours...

    Mountain Rescues

Shouldn't O'Reilly Stick to the Usual Hate Stuff? It's funny that summitpost wastes so much virtual ink on that blather-mouth O'Reilly, who, I wager, knows nothing about what lays beyond the curb stone, let alone what happens above treeline. If new winter climbing legislation or regulation...

    Skins with Nordic BC

What kind of skiing? Well, I was watching those folks climb up to Avalanche Lake and Mt. Marcy. It looked like Sherpa K was having fun when he skinned up Wildcat. That kind of stuff. It will never be my major focus in life, I'm just thinking it would be nice to be set up to go up and down some...

    Skins with Nordic BC

Randonee/Alpine Touring Bindings & Boots Does anybody go for this type of set-up instead of the 3-pin set-up for back country, climbing, etc? I am contemplating what to do in this vast new realm, and picture myself only crashing into trees if I tried to execute a telemark turn, as opposed to...

    Avalanche Trap Dyke

I don't think you get a lot of snow lingering on that face either. We were up on Avalance Lake a couple of months ago, when the wind was blowing a steady 25 mph, and it was pretty bare on the slabs that see in the pictures. I imagine that it's a little different near the top, where people...

    Balmy Day on Washington

Actually The Hot Water Freezes Faster thing is not that complicated. Hot water in freezer has greater tendency to evaporate SO with less water in the ice cube tray, of course it freezes faster. It comes down to the water does not freeze faster, there is just less of it to freeze. Ya?

    Marshall this weekend? (2/17)

Is there enough snow for Cliff? Neil turned me onto some old posts on the Cliff Winter Route. Awfully tempting. Who else might be venturing that way this weekend, and do you, in your wisdom, think we have enough snow to cover that pesky blowdown?? Cheers!

    Marshall this weekend? (2/17)

Marshall this weekend? Or maybe Cliff Winter Route (2/17) Just wondering if anybody else might also be out breaking trail to Marshall or Cliff (Winter Route) this weekend? Please? We are thinking of Saturday or Sunday ourselves, from the Flowed Lands. Nice storm, eh? cheers.

Trails known to be covered by avalanche?

Avalanche Pass? Does the name say it all? I have never seen avalanche warnings posted for this stretch of the Adirondacks, but I probably don't know the right place to look. This might be on my menu this weekend (assuming no avalanche warnings).

Noanet Woodlands in Dover, MA - elevation and mileage?

Noanet I suggest you park at Caryl Park off Dedham Street in Dover. The park abuts the Noanet woodlands, and I bet you would find about 5 miles of round tripping pretty easily if you are headed to the top of Noanet "Peak" and then stretch it our farther to the south. There is a very pretty view...

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

What would Ed do? I recently finished Ed Veisturs' book, No Shortcuts to the Top, about climbing the world's 14 8,000 meter peaks. He got all of the peaks without oxygen, though he did use a little O2 on a couple of his many trips up Everest as a guide or on a project. Looking back, he...

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

Map and Compass I'm with MadRiver on the map and compass. Jacket pocket is fine for the map, compass is in a litle pocket attached to the pack strap for easy access. As I was thinking of this fellow over the weekend, it seems that in such lousy weather one would be best off with some sort of...

    2006 Recap

What I did myself was less than planned, far less than desired, and not worthy of listing except for one item: I enticed my fiance, Denise, to hike her first 4,000 footer, Moriah, in August, which she accomplished handily despite an aching knee. Her previous summit experience had been limited...

    Climate Change in the Northeast

And the beat goes on Giggy: Some of the nasty effects were mentioned above. Sea levels rising several feet is pretty nasty for those low-lying countries. If memory serves, I think the rate of rise is around .1 inches per year, but if Greenland starts unloading faster it would be faster. As I...

    Climate Change in the Northeast

Wheat is on the move . . . According to a piece at www.nytimes.com, in the next forty years (it is predicted) wheat production will move north to Canada, Alaska and Siberia, because it will be too warm to grow wheat down here. Interesting article with a pretty map too. Since I will not quite...

    Climate Change in the Northeast

El Nino Since we are in a mild/moderate El Nino year, there will be lots of wild anecdotes to yak about this year. One of the things the skeptics on this thread might consider is the actual rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (it's way up, no numbers at my finger tips, I'm too lazy at the...
