    Reading wing prints

I would guess that a small raptor was plucking a rodent from the hole. Do I win a dead mouse?

    Yet another Quiz

Mount Lowell? It would be pretty foolish to go up there in winter   ;)

Is your license plate 'DKNIGHT'? I saw it on a southbound (Mitsubishi?) SUV in Nashua yesterday afternoon. I looked for tell-tale VFTT & AMC stickers, but saw none. The Batman logo made me think it might have been someone else. ;-)

What happens when you try to hike a 4000-footer and get, um, a little turned around?

Wow! That beats any of my mis-adventures in navigation, and I have had some good ones ;)

    Skiing on Mount Cardigan

This might be a good place to start searching. They have miles of ski trails. I wouldn't recommend Cardigan as a first winter summit. It is rather steep at the summit cone.

MSR Denali Evo Strap Keeps Breaking!

You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly not comment ;) I have an older model of Evos. They have stood up to abuse, including occasionally accommodating a pair of Sorels. I am pushing 250 lbs with a full winter load, and have never had a problem with the front straps. My suspicion...

    Microspike Leashes

Last week, I had a problem with one of the tails falling off my MSR Denalis. This week, I had more problems, but I didn't have to backtrack to retrieve it. The tail was attached to the main part of the snowshoe with a length of string. Great minds think alike; soft minds run together ;)

Hawks Mtn, Mohawk Trail State Forest - 12/14

It was just a couple of large rocks, mostly buried in the earth. The small bump is going to disappear with this snowstorm. I happened to look back and saw a dark, furry head poking out. "Bear den! Frank, look!" It was over in seconds. Fortunately, the bear wanted no part of our hike. Lesson...

Hawks Mtn, Mohawk Trail State Forest - 12/14

Sunday morning, Dr Wu and I checked out the ice storm damage in western Massachusetts. We parked at the State Forest HQ on Rt 2, and went south of the road in search of the Trout Brook Trail. We followed the trail in about 3/4 of a mile, then meandered east in search of the ridge. There were a...

    Large winter storm coming

Wasn't that Glenn Close? She played a survivalist in that movie.

    Once in a lifetime visit

I was thinking the same, sort of. This park is mostly in Slovakia. I've always wanted to hike in eastern Europe.

Winter easing its grip on Northeast

I remember last winter crossing feeder streams surrounded by towering snowbanks. It made for some interesting crossings. I'm not so sure about that magical point not getting breached, however. February 08 was the wettest on February record for several locations in Eastern Massachusetts...

    Bears in Whites

When are these party crashers going to bed? I had an itinerary for Thanksgiving weekend that consisted of: 1) hike in a couple miles 2) build a fire 3) cook meat Fortunately, I couldn't shake the tryptophan in time to pack a sleeping bag (or meat). Sunday, I saw bear tracks, probably just a...

    Low-flying Jets over Maine

When I was 15, I hiked (most of) the John Muir Trail in California with my father. We had stopped for lunch one day and it started raining. We put the tent fly as a shelter and stayed pretty dry. We were in a high canyon, headed for a pass. Suddenly, we got buzzed by an F-4 Phantom. It came from...
