What gear do you dream of getting, or getting rid of....

I winter hiked with an Atmos 50 for a few years. I wouldn't consider that beaver tail strong enough to carry snowshoes. I used these (http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?20156-Backpack-Utility-Straps&p=216773#post216773) to hold my snowshoes to the back. Just recently I decided to try one...

    Snowshoes in the whites...

Paradox made it all the way to Lake Colden (4-5 miles w/1k+ feet gain) before the meeting the ranger who sent him back to his car. I've never heard of anyone being fined when respectful of the rangers.

    Floatplanes in Wilderness

(Un)fortunately the Adirondacks are not federal wilderness but rather state wilderness which comes with a different set of rules. I know I've seen sightseeing airplanes well below 2k feet AGL in the Adirondacks. I agree that floatplanes should not be allowed into these areas, there are plenty...

The Yin and Yang of Madison and Adams on a Winter Day 3-10-12

I don't know if you're a professional photographer, but your pictures are amazing. I love the composition in your shots, and that one picture of Madison Hut with the sign in the foreground already has me itching to go hiking again (and I just got back from a trip last night...). Thanks for sharing!

Isolation via Rocky Branch & Engine Hill BW 3/10/11

Conditions: Wore microspikes up until the bushwhack and then changed into snowshoes for the remainder of the hike until the completion of the bushwhack on the way back out. Broke through 4-6 inches of blown in snow along the bushwhack, Isolation trail, and Davis path. Some groups couldn't find...

Sawyer River Road walk for Carrigain condition ?

I've always wanted a pugsley, but I can't justify the $1k+ for a "novelty" bike that I'll only use a few times a year. I saw one at the mountaineer in Keene Valley last year and spent a few minutes drooling over it. If I could have found the owner, I certainly would have asked for a test ride.

    Ice Climbing Boots

I have terrible feet, I have the arch of a size 13, the total foot length of an 11.5, the width (for an 11.5) of a 4E (but normal for a 13), and a low volume (flat) foot. I just got a pair of Scarpa phantom guides (I have bought and sold cars for less money than the MSRP of these boots) but they...

    Bindings for Koflach Expe

I found these: http://www.wildsnow.com/bindings/silvretta-500-backcountry-skiing-binding/ After reading this: http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27279&highlight=silvretta Interestingly enough when I ran a Google query on mountaineering boot skiing (related terms) VFTT results were on...

    Street and Nye River Crossing

The Bouquet on the way to Dix at the Lean-to was open and running when we hiked on Saturday (2/4/12). We had to rock hop (well, ice covered rock hop) across until one spot where we were forced to walk on some of the thicker ice that remained.

Exciting Helicopter Footage From Mt. Washington

Saw this on the NH Parks & Rec blog: The National Guard was doing some drills with some touch & go landings. There was some pretty neat video. http://blog.nhstateparks.org/?p=1561

    Saddleback 1/28/12

Conditions: Ice down low, still plenty of snow up high (with a dust on crust). Microspikes (or similar) were the right tool up until 3000'+ where additional traction was needed on the steep parts of the orebed trail. MSR snowshoes were used from the steep section to the summit. This time of...

    Winter Boots ????

I wouldn't want to hike in my mountaineering boots unless I was doing something technical. I have both types and I very much prefer wearing the winter hiker over the mountaineering. The analogy I would use is: wearing mountaineering boots in winter is like wearing rock climbing shoes in summer...

Haystack & Basin From Garden 1/7/12

Conditions: Microspikes from Garden to Range Trail Junction MSRs over the bump between junction & Haystack trail Crampons to Summit of Haystack MSRs from Haystack trail to Basin, then over Shorey's Microspikes from Slant Rock back to Garden There is definitely enough snow up high for snowshoes...

    Macomb, S. Dix, E. Dix, Hough 12/28/11

Route: Winter parking -> Slide Brook & Macomb Slide -> South -> East -> South -> Hough -> Lillian Brook -> Out In from the winter parking lot, up Slide Brook in bare boots until base of Macomb slide. Wore crampons to summit of Macomb (Microspikes would have been insufficient). Stayed in...

    Snowy 12/17/11

Conditions: dusting -> 1" of snow down low, a few (3-4) inches of snow up high. Lots of ice in the steep section. There was flowing water on a lot of the trail, the mud wasn't frozen yet, and the stream crossings were exciting. Equipment Required: Traction for the steep section (microspikes...
