    "Bouldering" Glove

If you don't mind synthetic materials, I'm a huge fan of mechanics style work gloves for outdoor pursuits. If you want to spend a little more, consider looking into mountain bike gloves which would have a nice form fit, a leather (or synthetic) palm, and a nice breathable back. From what I've...

    Adirondack Loj And Garden Parking

Both the Loj and the Garden have the ability to pay via envelope after hours. When they fill up completely depends on who else wants to be hiking that weekend. The Loj has hundreds of spaces, so as long as you get an early start (say before 9 AM), you should be fine, whereas the Garden is maybe...

campground to stay at near Allen Mountain

Lake Harris is a NYS DEC campground in Newcomb, there was also a commercial campground in Newcomb that has been opened/closed multiple times over the last decade, not sure of its current state. Getting in to upper works takes around a half hour from Newcomb.

Questions about parking while camping in Baxter State Park.

Sounds like your problem is with other bikers giving you and your peers bad reputation, and not with the good folks at Baxter. As with many hobbies and lifestyles, all it takes is that one group of people to ruin it for everyone else, and then you get into the "this is why we can't have nice...

Water Filters: Squeeze vs Pump vs Gravity

*shudder* I have a hard enough time keeping the bladder and hoses clean with just water, I can't even imagine trying to clean out milkshake residue :D

Water Filters: Squeeze vs Pump vs Gravity

The scientist in me couldn't let this qualitative data suffice, so I picked up a vacuum gauge and built a test setup. With a camelbak bladder and their "big bite" valve, 5 cm/Hg of vacuum was required to drink water. With the filter in-line it required 10 cm/Hg to drink. The test setup looked...

Water Filters: Squeeze vs Pump vs Gravity

Purchased one of the sawyer inline models and played with it for the first time today (at home), drinking through it in the "straw" configuration (out of a glass of tap water) has about the same resistance as drinking a milkshake (McDonalds thickness, not a homemade with actual ice cream like...

    Best, most indestructible hiking boots??

I was on the waiting list for custom Limmers when I made the switch to trail runners, and have too never looked back. I use the same exact system as you do, best ones for hiking, 2nd best for local (low consequence, high mud) trail running, 3rd best for yard/trail work.

    4000 footers near Rumney

Yup: https://www.mountainproject.com/v/clip-a-dee-doo-dah/105888037 I've climbed it before in trail runners, so it certainly isn't a difficult or tricky climb (if you've done those sorts of things before).

    4000 footers near Rumney

Serious suggestion, rather than going to bag a 4k, see if one of your friends will bring you up "Clip-a-dee-do-da", which is a classic slab climb at Rumney which is more of a walk than a climb.

    EMS Going Bankrupt?

IMO, Best Buy has solved this with free in-store wifi and in-store no-hassle online price matching. I went in to check out some camera bags, saw that they were overpriced, and was mere seconds away from leaving and buying cheaper on Amazon before I noticed their signs about the policy. I brought...

Water Filters: Squeeze vs Pump vs Gravity

Are you using the sawyer with a squeeze bag, or are you using it in-line with hydration? Somewhat related: one trick I've used to get water out of shallow water sources (or trickles coming out of rocks), is to use a normal gallon zip-lock bag to collect the water, then you filter out of that.

Water Filters: Squeeze vs Pump vs Gravity

Thanks, that is useful to understand the setup. Where I continue to remain curious is in how much resistance it adds while drinking from the hydration system.

    Anyone Hike Mt. Mansfield Lately?

According to the GMC, high elevation trails are closed for mud season early this year due to the lack of snow and early warm temps: https://www.greenmountainclub.org/mud-season-mountains/

    MSR stoves Reactor..experiences? worth it?

I have both, and while I haven't used the reactor outdoors extensively, I was fairly displeased with the jetboil in mild winter conditions (tailgating at a football game). This tends to lend some credibility to my experiences...

Garfield And Galehead As A Loop

We did what you described (plus an out an back to the twins) in late winter a few years ago. The GRT was definitely the least traveled of all of the trails, but it still showed some evidence of traffic (though it took some work to follow and stay on the packed portion).

    cross country ski question

IMO, you're much better off walking. Here is my rationale: 1) Efficiency/Speed: If you don't really know how to xc ski, it isn't very efficient: you don't get much kick glide and downhills are more terror than fun. 2) Boots: You're going to be wearing new boots you've never used before for a...

    Single Handle Pulk Design

http://www.kencove.com/fence/Fiberglass+Posts_detail_F12-4SG.php In order to get my shipping-per-unit costs down, I actually built three full sets. Shipping from both Kencove and McMaster were both reasonable regardless. If you're ever in the Syracuse, NY area, I have a full set of (partially...

    Single Handle Pulk Design

We pulled on two trips: Abol to Chimney Pond and Abol to Daicy Pond, if you're trying to do anything steep/twisty/etc... you're going to have a bad time. My two cents on pulks (after having built a set of commercial quality ones using fiberglass rod and metal fittings for all the connections)...
