Bald and Speckled, West Peru 2/5/2011

Date of Hike: 2/5/2011 Trail Conditions: Moderately deep powder base to summit. Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes! Comments: It appeared that nobody had been here since at least the previous snow storm, perhaps the previous several. Parking was tricky, but we managed to find a spot...

Cool camera...not so good for hiking

I actually was given a 6x9 rollfilm back for my LF, and while I've had it mounted just to check it out, I've never actually used it. I even have some old 120 rolls from my 645 days, I should give it a shot some day. Part of the problem is that I'd have to test it on something tightly...

Cool camera...not so good for hiking

I have one of those, though mine is fairly modern in construction. I bought it brand new 4 years ago (a Shen Hao HZX 4X5-IIA). Also, the lenses both on mine and the one picture in the original post are also fairly modern, most coming from German companies - Rodenstock and Schneider, or more...

    Odd natural phenomenon

I heard this while going up the Hammond trail on Chocorua yesterday, and had to record it as it was interesting (to me anyway). Basically, it's water running beneath a layer of ice, creating a sound not unlike that of a motor running. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZiAYCctZ4o Weird! -csprague

    Mt Chocorua via Hammond/Liberty

Date of Hike: Sunday 12/5/2010 Trail Conditions: Bare at trailhead, river crossings a little tricky (I fell in the second one as the branch I was walking across had a thin layer of ice. Luckily I had waterproof snow pants as I ended up sitting 6-8" deep in the river). Starting about a half...

    Grave/memorial marker on Pleasant Mountain

Thanks to Ed'n Lauky and everyone else for the helpful info. I've always sort of wondered what the story was behind that marker, and now I know! I knew someone here would be able to help. Chris

    Grave/memorial marker on Pleasant Mountain

I just found this by Google, this time armed with the full, correct name: From an article dated 12/7/1992, "LYNN -- A 38-year-old woman was killed early yesterday in a one-car accident, police said. Arlyne P. Prime of Danvers was driving north on Western Avenue about 6:15 a.m. when her car...

    Grave/memorial marker on Pleasant Mountain

A friend of mine climbed Pleasant Mountain via the Ledges trail on Saturday, and when we were discussing it I asked her if she'd noticed the grave marker at the first set of ledges. She had, but like me, had some questions. Sorry if I have no picture or few details right now, but perhaps other...

    Reddington Questions

I climbed Redington back in June on a very rainy day, so I didn't sign the log, either. I did have my friend snap a quick photo of me on top, I suppose that's enough "proof" that I was there. Chris

    Massive blowdown in Ammonoosuc Ravine

Wow that was fast, thanks! That's a pretty impressive avalanche!

    Massive blowdown in Ammonoosuc Ravine

Perhaps I'm late to the game here, but I haven't hiked up this trail in awhile, and while hiking up today, I noticed a massive blowdown that was probably a quarter-mile long or more. It had a pretty clear boundary line, too. Did a tornado hit this or something, and if so, when? Here are two...

    Baxter Parking? - Russell Pond

Yes, your reservation at Russell Pond includes a parking spot at Roaring Brook. Last time I went there, I was instructed to park on the "camping" side of the lot. The day-use passes only apply to the "day use" side of the RB parking lot. I'm sure they'll tell you where to go when you enter...

Who can identify the species in this picture?

I saw this just below tree-line on North Brother on Saturday. The golf-tee looking things caught my attention first, and in the end, the entire picture was interesting. It seems that the lichens that look like golf tees are called podetia, but what else can be identified? Chris

Maine climber missing since 1989 found

I suppose "body of missing hiker recovered" is a more accurate term. I'm sure it's good for his family to have closure. http://www.pressherald.com/news/Body-of-Gorham-Maine-climber-missing-1989-discovered-in-Canadian-Rockies.html

    2010 Fall Foliage thread

A few of the birches are *just* starting to turn up in Baxter State Park, at least in the vicinity of the Marston Trail. I'd put the yellow foliage at about 1% of the overall birch foliage. Nothing else seemed to be turning yet. The sampling was pretty random, too, and not strictly localized...

    North Brother via Marston Trail

Date of Hike: 8/28/2010 Trail Conditions: Some mud in the flats and mostly down low, terrible erosion in the last mile, but that's been that way for awhile. Otherwise very passable, new bog bridges throughout, and the the Maine Conservation Corps was there putting in more. We did not hike the...

Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

Very good. That is indeed a mash paddle. I suppose my consumption of beer (and now that I've been outed as a homebrewer, it goes without saying that said beer isn't light beer) doesn't help with my weight maintenance, either... However, I have yet to drink beer *during* a hike. Now if I...

Losing Weight and Getting into Shape

I'm late to this thread, but I thought I'd share my own story. I got into hiking by way of photography, but as recently as 4 years ago I weighed in at 260lbs, on my tiny 5'5" frame(!!!). I'd always wanted to go to Chimney Pond to photograph it, so a friend of mine and I made a reservation for...

    Tumbledown Mtn., Maine, August 14

In my trail condition report, I called the trail we took up the "Pond Link Trail", so I'm not actually sure that we did the same thing. It's possible that I got the name of our trail wrong, though. http://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23280 How did you determine the name of the trail...
