    Looking for a softshell

My favorite no longer made soft shell was made by MEC, the ferratta I think, the MEC Borderland Hooded Jacket seems to be close to that jacket and is under $200. For that sort of around town soft shell I've preferred windproof fleece, favoring an LL Bean hoody windproof fleece hoody which I...

    wind gauge altimeter thermostat

I've been using a kestrel 4000 for years. Originally to figure out exactly how cold it was the night before and how well my sleeping bag combo worked at that temp and to deal with tendency to over estimate wind speed I feel most folks have. It cost of worked for the sleeping application; under...

    0 degree or -20 degree?

Note, a bivy, VBL, bagliner and/or use of your outer layers can boost a bag 10-15° (YMMV). Not the most weight efficient way (aside from outer layers) weight wise but it can lessen the initial hit on the wallet. I've been cozy solo in a tent in below -20 temps in a -10 bag, but the...

Proposal to have NY section of VFTT?

As a NY'er who hasn't been posting (or even lurking) in some time I can't say that splitting along regional lines would have any influence on me. I'm with Sherpa and Darren, it's a community thing, one that I've taken real advantage throughout the NE. I really think the issue of lower...

    Rental listings

I looked into rentals before buying a kayak and fund that unless you could prove a level of skill most of the places were very reluctant to do so. There is EMS n Portland that doesn't seem uptight in this regard and an outfitter based in Long Beach, LI that is apparently the same way (Eagle...

    Hibernating

Last year I stopped mid to end of October, around when the water dipped to the mid 50's. This year with a "cheap" drysuit from STP I'll likely be doing some paddling through the winter. Here, practically, with a wet suit it's usually November before the water is too cold.

    Getting to know you...

I only have sea kayaks and then only folding ones. I have a Feathercraft K1, 16 1/2', 25" beam. It hauls a lot of gear and these days I use it only for longer trips. It's pretty a damn stable boat. I also have a Feathercraft Wisper 15' 9", 23 1/2 beam. I use this for day trips and for any...

Kayaking Muscongus Bay - Maine Island Trail Association

That is *precisely* my experience. Especially in surf........ Hmmm.. I've been up in Portland a lot lately, probably not again until October but if you have a boat that close.... Carmel, Trip sounds great, just back from the trip with Jay in Penobscott Bay. It's amazing up there, wished the...

    Kayaking-Maine Island Trail Association- 8/25-8/27

Somehow I missed the dates when I first posted yesterday. I'll only be available that weekend if by some miracle my car is back in my hands. It was due back in my hands something like 4 months ago so I'm not counting on it.... But I have been kayaking sort of down the block from me, on the East...

    In-Line Water Filter??

I have what seems to be this: http://www.ula-equipment.com/filter2.htm But made by another company and the larger half is clear lexan. Works well, best if you carry a water bag with a bottle and set up a gravity fed filter, I just dont like sipping water. Girlfriend loves hers, has no problem...

    Kayaking-Maine Island Trail Association- 8/25-8/27

Carmel- thanks for the pm on this. I've been going over the MITA book over the past two week looking for a decent region- Jay H and I have been talking about doing something up there, I was settling on the Penobscot bay. Stonington is a nice area- LauraM, Jay H Funky Fred and I were up there a...

    day packs choices...

I looked at the RT a while back. The fellow in the store mentioned the roll top was a constant bother, hitting the back of his head and getting in the way. I'm suspicious of waterproof packs. Once water does get in where will it go except to collect at the bottom of the pack where ones down...

Should the shelters in Wild River be removed?

Okay, in most cases I'm a take it out of the woods guy for wilderness. But if the area is not designated as such yet, the structure presents no immediate maintance/safety problem, why waste the time and money on it? I mean, aren't there non-conforming structures in wilderness areas they can...

Water filters and treatment discussion..Part 1, source and filters.

Please correct me, someone, if I am wrong..... Even a disinfectant soap and air drying wont kill all organisms on whatever you are washing. See Lawn Sales comments near the start of the thread in regards to need a certain concentration of a "sterilizing agent". I think for the common man...

What's the best thing you've learned here?

It's hard to track the best but: Sour cream can be dehydrated (yet untested) I specifically remember something Neil brought up about a year ago and going "AHA! excellent tibit of knowledge" can't for the life of me remember the tidbit. Oddly, it may have had to do with vacuum bagging "After...

Sweetie Pie ... sleeping bag doubler..

I used a larger sweetie pie through winter 04-05. Excellent piece of gear, though I think I would go for the smaller one, especially if you're a cuddling couple. In some ways the larger one was too large, especially around the torso/shoulders. Getting a good neck seal with two was difficult...

    Next paddling show-ADKs

I'm not sure if I'll be heading up early Friday or Friday night. It's unlikely I'll know until shortly before the event. I will have an extra kayak with me....
