    It's winter, it's time to think about...paddling.

The bus is supposed to drop you off at the center, but I cant find the specific info on the site right now, I'll look into it tonight if I can. I amy be able to pick up my car that weekend, if so I can offer rides ot the city bound and carless, if not I can offer company on the bus. Really...

    Weather Radios

I have a weather radio that's built into a FRS/GRS handheld and a VHF marine radio that gets the weather channels. I had a midland unit that did just weather and had the SAME feature. The SAME feature was a waste. Difficult to program and of dubious use in the backwoods, as it requires leaving...

    Leadership

On the topic of leadership, especially considering internet based ad hoc trips the above above quote should be considered very important knowledge for all hikers.

NYC Get-together for Banff Film Festival

I'll be waiting out front after 7, maybe earlier. Received this today about tickets: Extra Vertical has sold out for both dates. Paragon Sports has approximately 20 tickets left for each night and will be selling them until 1:00 PM on Monday. Paragon is at 867 Broadway at 18th Street (they open...

    It's winter, it's time to think about...paddling.

Is it time for a VFTT spring kayak trip thread? I don't know if I can make it Friday, I don't think I can get there until 7 at the earliest. The Sunday idea is a good one, but I really shouldn't buy anything right now. A dry top would be useful for a VFTT spring kayak trip.....

good peak to view sunset, adk

Treadway Mnt. is a good choice. Do it mid august, time it with the persieds and budget some time to bushwack to Pharaoh lake for some swimming. It was a really good trip.

    Lightweight stove choice?

A foam sleeping pad makes a handy wind break. I've seen folks manage well with canisters in 20° winter temps. I've seen them work in a hanging kit in the low single digits. That person, after that trip, switched to white gas, I think. If I'm melting my water I bring white gas, if not I'll...

    It's winter, it's time to think about...paddling.

There are boathouse that do them, it can be hard to get in on a trip especially if you're not some sort of regular and they know your skill level. Circumnavigations can be long trips, 30 miles or so and you need to be able make the currents or they become really long trips. If you email me...

    Catskills, Escarpment Trail 2/17 - 2/20

Yeah, I'm packing tonight while having thoughts about moving it to next weekend. Now that it's finally cold, I can't travel as light as I'd like to. We should talk about a trip sometime in March. Maybe there will be snow.

    What's wrong with wool ?

My first "soft shell" was a wool USAF heavy cold weather shirt, breathable, wind resistant and some insulation. It's hard to market a wool piece, we all know how it performs, what it's like. Something can be implied to have all sorts of mythical properties if it's new and we haven't heard of it...

    Catskills, Escarpment Trail 2/17 - 2/20

Note: All, I'll be arriving at the trailhead around noon on Saturday, not Friday night.

"Pound the Presis" - Presi travese to benefit TBTS

Congratulations to the both of you. Did you meet on the trail? Jay, I can't do it this year, that will be the weekend of the Clearwater Festival, I've been volunteering there for something like 11 years, it has seniority.

Thanks for the Desktop (Post yours if you wish!!)

Maavs is a Mac user, I knew I liked him! I have my screensaver crank through all my photos but otherwise I'm a plain desktop sort of guy. OK, OK for a while I had a real time NE satellite weather map as a desktop but it was distracting every time it changed.

    What Temperature Sleeping Bag

A good 15°-25° bag should be adequate for fall and spring, depending upon your personal comfort level and metabolism. A silk or duofold liner, a bivy and your clothes can be used to boost the bag as needed. At first I bought for sales, then after getting a good portion of my gear stolen I went...

    Catskills, Escarpment Trail 2/17 - 2/20

I'd want to be on the trail by ten but it looks like I'll be arriving later rather earlier on Friday, so I may linger beyond that. If I know your coming, I can wait for you. I won't be returning to the start, the bus back to the city is in Palenville. I'm bussing this one, the car is still on...

    Catskills, Escarpment Trail 2/17 - 2/20

I'm planning on heading up to the Catskills and attempting the Escarpment Trail for the long weekend. I'll be arriving in Tannersville at 5 or 9 on Friday evening, grabbing a meal at the Last Chance and staying at Elm Ridge Lean to Fri. night. It'll be my first trip this winter after nursing a...

20 degree sleeping bag in winter?

I'll be using a 15° bag for a trip to the Catskills this weekend. If I was going to the ADKs or Whites, it being my first time out in a while I'd bring a heavier bag. A lighter bag maxed out with clothing is a valid option. Test it first.

    VFFT for (temporary) non-hikers

I fall into the I'm not hiking I don't post much camp. It's also been the longest break I've had from backpacking since I first started it's been a major pain. I think the knee is finally in shape to hit a trail again but the car is still on the mend. sigh... soon, soon.
