    John Bachar dies free-soloing

I admire the physical and mental fortitude of free soloists.. In fact, Steph Davis is one of my heros. That said, I think it is a bit out there. Crazy even, but to each his/her own. May he rest in peace.

Backpacks, how many is too many?

Backpacks, how many is too many?

I seem to have gathered at least 6 different backs over the years. I went to EMS this weekend, and bought another Osprey because I liked it and it was comfortable. (It was also 20% off) I have a different pack for backpacking, ice climbing, backcountry skiing, rock climbing, and dayhiking. I...

    Whiteface / Tripyramids - June 19 - 20, 2009

Sounds like a fun trip. I thought of you guys on Saturday. Here in my area of MA we had sun/clouds all day. Never really rained. I was hoping that would be the case in the Whites. Smart move with the dry bags. I pack with them even when no rain is expected. You never know when you might fall...

    Naked Hiking Day

Unfortunately, since it is still "April" outside, it may be too cold to hike sans clothing. Oh yeah, the mosquitos and black flies would have a party...:D

    Durango or Yosemite?

Yosemite. The Valley, while busy with tourists, is worth it. Raft down the Merced with the crowds. It is a blast. Stay in the Valley a few days to see the sights, then head up the high country. Before you leave the Valley, get pizza and beer at Curry Village. We enjoyed our stay at White Wolf...

    Rain All Weekend

Ditto Dreamfarmer; BTW, the weather in the Whites can change on a dime, and it doesn't always tell the weatheren doing the prediction! s

    Rain All Weekend

I did the Kinsmans in rain and fog. There is a nice shelter at the pond, which is beautiful. We had a great time, despite the zero visability, and I recommend it. Unfortunately, the Fishin' Jimmy has some steep slippery rocks, but we did them without a problem. I think the Kinsman Pond trail is...

    Osseo trail question

Is this trail dog friendly? I have never hiked it and I am aware that there is a section of ladders. Are they negotiable by a (big and lumbering) dog? Thanks sandy

    Bear Alert Near Autoroad...

One of the any reasons I'd never ride my motorcycle up Mt Washington. Cute cubs, though. I like how her husband took pictures of his wife getting sniffed up by a bear instead of trying to shoo her away. Is this a happy marriage???

    Wildcat zipline? (and other things)

I think you would be better off hiking up the ski trails. The Wildcat ridge trail is quite rough, and unrelentingly steep. It could be discouraging for her, unless she is in great shape and likes bugs. I like the 19-mile brook trail as an introduction. Once you get to the hut, and have lunch...
