Great place, isn't it? Looks like your moose friends even build little cairns for you. :D

Hornet Nest on Thoreau Falls Trail

I've been stung three times by 10-15 "bees" (little black nasty critters) that live in the ground. Painful, but the weeks of itching afterwards was worse. Our dog Leo was stung by a couple of bumblebees on the State Line Trail near Watatic a few weeks ago. I now carry Benadryl and a bit of...

    Killington-67

Congrats! Pat and I also finished our 67 many years ago on Killington. There were about 100 people who rode the gondola up on the summit, so our celebration was very small and quiet. Love the Beef!

    Are poles worth it?

I agree with the polers! I also have BD flicklocks, having had bad luck with Lekis, Komperdells, etc. Even on "sidewalk" terrain I like them because my hands hanging at my sides tend to swell after an hour or two. I've protected Leo from a mean Jack Russell terrier; I can almost always recover...

    2011 Adirondack BBQ and Gathering

Sorry that Pat and I missed most everyone on Friday since most of you were out to dinner. Next year for sure. I was very impressed with the excellent space and surroundings you had at Magic Pines, even a swimming pool. Is that where the beer was being chilled?

What (or who) got you hiking?

A casual acquaintance suggested an October trip up Monadnock and I was blown away by the beauty of the hike. Knowing nothing about any other mountains, my next two hikes were also on Monadnock. The November one nearly killed me but I learned a lot about icy rocks and ledges. The June one taught...

Status of Mt Whitney Trail - Update

Generally, someone who has a true allergy gets a much worse reaction than an itchy bump. Over the years, I stopped reacting to the bites but since my leukemia diagnosis and subsequent stem cell transplant, I'm reacting like I used to, darn it. I imagine my new immune system must build up again...

Status of Mt Whitney Trail - Update

It would be helpful to know why mosquitoes gather in some areas and not others. Last year's weeklong trip to the Eastern Sierras included several hikes in Yosemite. Gaylor Lakes didn't have a single mosquito, while Cathedral Lakes had more of the winged avengers than we see around here in a...

    4 VT 4K's

Most times we've hiked Killington via the ski trails, we've used the trails near the Snowdon lifts and upon reaching the ridgeline, did a short bushwhack to the Long Trail and then followed it to the summit. Hard to go wrong on the ski trails though, just keep heading up. Going downhill, just...

Crown Point Bridge work coming along

No Need For A Mountain - NYT article

I've never found this type of competition interesting in the Olympics because the artificial course makes every move predictable. It's how well one makes those moves that determines the winner. Moguls and kayaking immediately came to mind. A few inches of real <gasp> snow on a downhill course...

    Black bear attack in Montana

Ani Haas, a skier on the US ski team, got between a mother and cubs. Luckily her injuries weren't serious. I don't know if attacks are more frequent or if they're deemed more newsworthy lately. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/43969162/ns/today-today_people/?gt1=43001

    2011 Adirondack BBQ and Gathering

We'll have to go home on Saturday morning since we're having a party for a grandson who's departing for Marine bootcamp, so I'm counting on the fact that there'll be some folks around on Friday night...yes??????
