Happy to see my favorite people are signing up! We're in recovery mode here...Pat had a total knee replacement a week ago and the Sallese household is hobbling along for now.

Save the date: Pat and Audrey's potluck November 2

Congrats, Max and Patti! Just keep on loving your new home in Arizona and we'll celebrate for you. I'm just back from 6 days in Austin Texas (for Pat's son's wedding) where it was over 100 degrees every day. We hiked about 2 miles in the Hill Country one day and were pretty proud of that!

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

On July 17th we were hiking part of the AT near Dunn Falls and met her husband on East B Hill Road. He was waiting for her to finish that section and they were heading to Andover for overnight. He seemed a bit concerned with the time it was taking her but we couldn't say wherether she was all...

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

In the Harvard Square store, I couldn't find decent pants for summer hiking, and the sales clerk had never heard of Patagonia (EMS only sells their line of shoes now, but still...). They cater to the students mostly.

    Dog Gear

I can't help you with your question; my dog's a Lab and doesn't need clothing, but I do want to thank you for adopting that underappreciated section of trail.

Drawing the line between hiker and climber

We here probably know the difference but the nonhiking nonclimbing public don't care about "semantics." People still ask if we use ropes and helmets when we say we are going for a summertime hike.

    Amusing mountain names

Boil Mt and Onion Hill are side by side in Maine.

    Austin Texas hiking

Thanks, Doug and Michelle. I also found a few more very photogenic spots such as Hamilton Pool, as well as a nature preserve you can visit by appointment only. It's fun to research a place you've never been. I'll probably pass on the spider caves!

    Hiking/ski poles

Hmmm, I didn't feel unbalanced at all. They are light and swingy and the tips don't make any difference that I'm aware of. I guess I'm just a philistine. The cork handles are bent just a little from vertical and are quite comfortable.

    Hiking/ski poles

I was looking in EMS for a pair of backcountry ski poles and ended up buying a pair of Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Cork, in spite of the sales clerk's protests that they couldn't be used for skiing. Well, they seem to work just fine although they may be rather short for some people, and I...

    Austin Texas hiking

We'll be in Austin in late summer for a wedding and of course will go out a few days early so as not to "waste" such a long trip. I've ordered a hiking guide but would like to hear if anyone has done or knows of good spots in the vicinity. No, Big Bend is 500 miles away, darn it.

Save the date: Pat and Audrey's potluck Saturday October 27 in Lexington, MA

Thanks to our guests for making this one of the best. It was great to have such perfect weather for sitting around the fire outside - it was 2 a.m. before we knew it. And I'm sure glad that Pat and I like leftovers...

    Sunrise and sunset visibility

I should be more observant, but... On Oct. 11, sunrise (Concord NH) is at 6:56 am; how long before that does it actually start getting light enough to see without a headlamp? Sunset is at 6:09 pm; how long do I have after that before I have to pull out the headlamp? (Long hike planned before...

OK Bubba, don't get diverted and break our hearts. It would be nice to meet Alison too.

How to upset the locals regarding trail-head parking

We were there a couple of weeks ago and our two cars were the only ones parked (we were directly across the road) at the trailhead. I know it shouldn't be the landowner's burden, but it would probably help to erect some small No Hiker Parking signs at the edge of their property. City folk can...
