Getting towed near Mt. Tremont trailhead

In the winter I would never count on the trailheads being plowed as early as I'd like...a few years ago we beat everyone to the Ferncroft lot only to find many feet of fluffy snow and nary a track. Luckily we decided to wait and the plow came along soon and quickly made room for a few cars at...

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

Here in the suburbs of Boston, coyotes are present in the conservation lands as well as in back yards and on streets. A number of our dog owning friends have had encounters that were benign but stressful nonetheless. I'm happy to have a fenced backyard. How high can a coyote jump?? We...

    Kearsarge North Loop?

With bcborder's help, we hiked from HMR up to the marsh between Kearsarge North and Rickers Knoll around Christmas time. Here's a link to the 1934 AMC map, which he says is pretty accurate in relation to the actual trail. Being a follower that day, I can't say that I'd as easily negotiate the...

A fine weekend to start the season

Are any of you old enough to remember Mad Tom Shelter on Bromley and the open air privy with a great sunset view of twinkling city lights?

    Forum Personality Profile?

I'm a Penguinking, which according to one Wiki site, is the leader of the wild penguins and has been known to resort to bribery to keep the peace. Oh, and my picture shows me to be a royal purple color. Hmmm

    Gaiters for New England

I have some OR gaiters that wore out at the neoprene foot strap, so I'm going to call the company since VFTT members say they've been able to get the gaiters replaced when this happens. Still, a pair of RABs caught my eye and they fit me much better than any of the current OR's so I got them...

    2 rescued on Chocorua

Maps at trailheads may work for many or most, but they had better be complete and accurate. Here's a story: We had just climbed Paugus and were returning to Ferncroft via Mt. Wonalancet. Halfway down, we caught up with a couple, Forest Service map in hand, who were starting to think they might...

Anyone regret buying a NON gore-texed boot?

When I used to wear full leather boots, well waterproofed, I found them as dry as Gore-tex. But they required fussy cleaning and greasing, weren't as comfortable, gave me blisters, and took too long to dry. Because of the shape of my foot, I am a very happy Keens wearer even if the tread and/or...

    Paugus oh Paugus AGAIN?????

I've never been on the northern part of the Bolles. Would the missing bridges make XC skiing tedious? I hope you had a chance to climb Paugus via the Lawrence Tr before they rerouted it to the valley. It was one of the most interesting trails in the area.

    "Lynx spotted in northern NH"

At Galehead Hut a few months ago, someone mentioned seeing a large cat on the Twinway near Zealand Mt. and the hut "naturalist" was very quick to identify it as a lynx. I had my doubts...but this is good news.

Blueberry Ledge Trail and Sleeper Trail to nice area below Whiteface summit, Nov.20th

Nice area! I had read that insects and other critters make short work of discarded antlers for the minerals they contain. That mossy one looks like it's been lying there quite a while...?

Romance and Hiking Do Mix, 11/12/2011

At the big rock just below the summit of Little Haystack...never mind that everyone goes behind there to pee. It was still romantic, though we can't equal Mt Whitney or Granite Peak!

    Tully Mountain

It is an excellent area for various types of recreation. I've done the entire Tully Trail and there is one road walk in particular that can be hazardous. As you exit Tully Mt to the west, Tully Road to Butterworth Road has really no shoulder to walk on, there are steep embankments on both...

mt cardigan holt trail, is it really that tuff?

It's quite short and if it isn't wet then your boots ought to hold just fine on the rock. If you have a fear of steep rock, you may have to summon up a little extra courage.. Pat and I had no problems at all (and I'm not a fan of exposure) but we did have to talk a woman upwards as she froze in...
