    Sad Passing of Tuckerman RIP

We're happy to have met you, Tuck, when Leo was a pipsqueak. Give a lick to all those good dogs in heaven. So sad.

Horror / Vandalism on Cliff Mt.!

And they didn't give themselves away by signing in? I recall a similar fiasco where the perpetrators bragged proudly.

need quick Telemark gear help/recs please

Chip, with your previous experience you don't need starter skis. Invest your money in the best fitting boots you can find and afford. You just need to decide is how much stiffness you think you want in a back country boot. But you know all about that since you've got AT. Using your Atomics...

    Water for Wounds

My 2 cents...My first trip to Nevada, gawking at the sights in the desert, I went flying and scraped most of the skin off the outside of my lower leg. A superficial infection set in and no amount of washing, ointment, wrapping, unwrapping helped for about 10 days. When I got home, I started...

Ash Borer Article from the NYTs

There are likely many biological dependencies that human beings don't even know about. The loss of ash trees may precipitate the loss of other species, animal or vegetable. Too bad we're learning so late that diversity is a good thing and that our plantings should be varied to help mitigate...

    Nellie's first hike

Ideally, some training would do both of you a lot of good. It won't be comfortable meeting people with aggressive barking going on. Dog owners can be just as intolerant of such behavior as dog-haters and dog-phobics because it reflects on all of us, and some people won't care that she's...

Ash Borer Article from the NYTs

I have to include the winter moth in this discussion, as it's had a major impact in some parts of Massachusetts. We have to have our two huge maples sprayed and a Japanese maple too, as it would be a tragedy to lose them. The males fly during the winter, and on a warmish night I don't dare go...

Cherry Mountain (Mt. Martha) and Owl's Head - 08/07/2010

Cooperhill, The unidentified plant looks like a fireweed just before blooming. We were there Sept 4 but the haze obscured all but the faintest outline of the mountains. No matter, the asters and goldenrods painted a beautiful fall picture. And the hundreds of dragonflies wouldn't pose for a photo.

Sept. 14: New Draft Management Plan for the Middlesex Fells

Thanks griffin and peaks for keeping us aware of developments. We met a couple of DCR wetlands scientists, working also on an RMP, inspecting the huge beaver pond and bog near Walden last week. Luckily my dog wasn't with us so I didn't have to escape back across the tracks.

New area to explore - information needed

Sure enough, there is (or was) a beautiful herd path from the summit of Bald. Just follow that narrow ridge down and then up. Bald was closed for a few years and later reopened. It's a premier blueberry hill. The first time we climbed Saddleback Wind, though, we approached from a set of...

Highpoint: Maine. Katahdin (5268 ft). August 31, 2011

To Bratt's cautions I'd add SCORPIONS in the boots and under the tent, etc.. I've only been stung by a small, less toxic variety, but they do get your attention. Some rattlers announce their presence with a bold rattle (lucky us), but others don't. Do not step near any potential hiding place...

Save the date: Pat and Audrey's potluck Saturday 11/5/11

Well, now that an adventure-filled year has almost gone by, I'm extending our usual invitation to attend our potluck in Lexington, MA. Since it's still 2 months away, I'll post details later. There's plenty of room for sleepovers, and we NEVER run out of food. There'll be plenty left for the...

I couldn't even pick out a favorite photo, there are so many. And that marmot looks like a bear in disguise.

    Can anyone identify this insect?

This year I let the mint in my garden flower and was introduced to many species of nectar sippers and pollen gatherers. The flowers are over 5 feet tall, so I could get lots of pictures right at eye level. It was heartening to see so many honeybees again, after a couple of years of wondering...
