    A Poll about Poles

I was advised to use poles right after I started hiking regularly since I have chronic knee pains. I depend on them a lot for balance and support, but when the legs get tired on uphills, it is nice to be able to switch to upper body and take some pressure off the knees. Also, going downhill...

    Welch-Dickey 10/30/06 AM

I took a day off and did a morning hike on Welch-Dickey last Monday morning, 10/30. The weather was very nice, though the conditions were wet following the heavy rainstorms on Saturday into Sunday. I got to the trailhead at about 0830 and headed up the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail going...

    Wonalancet, a leap behind

With the extra hour of sleep and a gloomy day on the horizon, Chinooktrail and I decided to venture up Mt. Wonalancet, via Ferncroft Road. We started up the Wonalancet Range Trail at quarter of ten (eastern STANDARD time) with overcast skies, on and off light precipitation, and a temperature of...

    Flags on Monroe - 9/9/06

Honoring the tragic victims of September 11th is the least any of us should do. I woke up early on Saturday the 9th and went back to basics, starting with a breakfast at my mother’s house and an early drive up north. I pulled into the Cog parking lot a little before eight and met GO, Kevin...

    Monroe for FOF 9/9

Okay, I will be at the Cog Station at 0800 (or close enough to that for a person driving up from CT) and start up the Ammonoosuc Trail at around 0815. I will have a pole and flag. Any others interested in bringing anything else with you, it would be great. Plan on doing the National Anthem at...

    Hedgehog 7/23

I finally broke away from the electronic leash of work long enough to do SOME type of hike, and it was amazing. I can't put it to words, but getting back on the trail after really being away for about two months or more just seemed like a reunion with old friends. And the first of the old...

    map making question

Best book I ever saw on maps is Nathaniel Bowditch's American Practical Navigator, which is primarily a marine navigation book, but it gives a phenomonial mathmatical description of the different types of projections for chart making.
