    Western Maine 4ks

With two cars, you have a lot of options. If you're not opposed to backpacking, you can do Saddleback, the Horn, Abraham, Spaulding, Sugarloaf, Redington, and the Crockers in 3 days. You start one group at Saddleback and the other at Route 27 near Carrabassett and exchange keys in the middle...

    Email from "Department of Goods"

How do people feel about the new format? I liked the old one better.

    Recommended GPS?

I got my little brother a Magellan eXplorist 200 on sale for $30 at Sports Authority a couple days ago. It seems to do all the basic stuff. Check for clearance sales of last year's models.

    Yellowstone / Tetons

I support the votes for Washburn. It's a fun mountain. I was there a few years ago on a family trip (so no backpacking :() and had a blast. If you want to do any peaks with a guide, Exum Mountain Guides is based in Jackson Hole.

    Worlds Fastest Summiter

:D I just had a vision of the little lemur wearing a puffy, snow pants, and crampons and waving an ice axe and squeaking "I walk fast!" It just about killed me, funniest thing I've seen all day.:D:D

    Calling all young map afficionados...

Sounds awesome! I'd enter in a heartbeat, but I'm working right now and only in school part time. :( Still sounds like a really cool contest.

    Worlds Fastest Summiter

My favorite "speed summiter" is Ueli Steck. His aerobic capacity is otherworldly. Here is a video of him running at 10,000 feet (and above). The guy's incredible.

    Deciding between winter jackets

My vote is for the Dragon. I've got the MH Torch (Dragon's older brother) and absolutely love it for winter trips. Also consider getting an insulating vest of some sort. Some of my friends go with a light down one, others prefer fleece. Personally, I like my TNF Apex Elixir vest as a...

That's too bad.:( It was similar to Outside, but different enough that it was worth reading both.

    So, what'd you get?

Cool! I've got a raised relief (formerly known as the awesome-3D-plastic-map/model-thing) map of RMNP and find it to be much more wall-friendly than topo maps.

    So, what'd you get?

Christmas is a really stressful holiday and can be a huge pain in the rear, but it does have some a few redeeming qualities. Namely presents. Got a lot of functional, "mature" (read: boring but good to have) presents. However, a few people really came through. My younger brothers got me a...

    Fixing Postholes (NOT a rant)

RE: stronger or weaker group members. On an Outing Club trip last winter, I was one of two people in a 12 man group to break trail. All the way up Tumbledown, the other guy and I switched off every 400 yards. It was a good workout.

Well, as a matter of fact, I did one yesterday. Unfortunately, it was in Illinois. I'm at home this year, so it'll be fall of 2010 before I'm back in New England.

    eagle scouts

I'm a "Program Aide" in the In School Scouting Program. My official title is aide, but really, I end up running most of the sessions. My coworkers and I go to schools (and a couple Boys and Girls Clubs) in low income areas of the Council and teach the Cub Scout program to kids in 1-4th grade...

    Head lamps

You might look at the BDEL Spot or Cosmo. They in the $30 range and quite good. I've run with my Cosmo and didn't have any trouble.
