    stove with good track record

+1 For family backpacking trips, we bring two stoves (there are 6 of us). One is a two year-old MSR Whisperlite. The other is my dad's 20+ year old Svea. No pump, no moving parts, almost impossible to break, super stable. A bit heavier than a Whisperlite, but it's super reliable.

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

An addition to the above. There are a few things that should probably be said. For starters, I sometimes do look like an Idiot (yep, capital I) while hiking, but I'm ok with that. It's my choice, and it's usually pretty fun. For example: racing my friend up Sugarloaf from the AT. We dropped...

    Softshell conclusion-years later

I have three softshell pieces: MH Torch, Arc'Teryx Epsilon SV (no longer made:(), and TNF Apex Elixir vest. I used to have an MH Alchemy, but it got stolen late this fall. The Alchemy was my first softshell, bought it around sophomore or junior year of high school. I got it thinking that...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

Tim, I agree with almost everything you listed. However, as a gear junkie, I love to discuss gear, be it mine or someone else's and would add that to the "welcome" list. "Hey, I heard that pack was kinda uncomfortable. How's it working for you?" "Do you have trouble packing everything in...

Bald Mountain and Artists Bluff - 4/17/09 (hiking with both my daughters)

Nice TR, family trips are almost always the best. Some of the earliest pictures of me were taken on hiking trips, my dad carrying me in a kiddie backpack. :D Our family has been hiking for as long as I can remember and I'm definitely a better person for it. Keep the girls on the trails, they...

Camden Hills, an almost family event

My mom flew out to visit me this weekend. She got in early Saturday evening and is going back around midday on Monday. In keeping with our family tradition of never going anywhere without going for at least one hike, we decided to go for a hike on Sunday. I quickly narrowed down the list of...

    Camden Hills

The Camden Hills are almost entirely snow free. There are a few patches in the shade near Megunticook's summit but absolutely no need for snowshoes. Minor monorail action but it's all narrow enough to be avoided. Microspikes at your own discretion. I didn't bring any and was just fine, but...

Do I Look Like An Idiot?

I don't feel shy about asking for trail beta. If someone else is heading down when I'm heading up, I usually try to strike up a conversation, chat a bit, find out what the conditions are, etc. Info like that is always welcome.

    Your best "Worst Trip"

Was it late September? The ranger "strongly urged" us to not go above treeline but said that if we were determined to go, we should take Saddle instead of Cathedral (our original plan). I guess our boyish charm won him over.;)

    Your best "Worst Trip"

Wow, you guys have had some bad hikes! My best "bad" trip was to Katahdin this fall. I went up Katahdin in a rainstorm. It was the last remnant of a tropical storm that had started in the Carolinas and worked its way up the coast. The rain gauge at Chimney Pond said 7 inches fell while we were...

Help With Adding Flavor to Water

It works pretty well for both purposes. My dad (a pediatrician) recommends it to patients for general dehydration, not just dehydration due to diarrhea. Article.

Help With Adding Flavor to Water

Pedialyte might be an option. It's a hydrating formula designed for small children but is just fine for adults. Low sugar but high in electrolytes. It's becoming more popular for athletes as an alternative to gatorade and other sugarwater products.
