    Little Jackson/Tumbledown

The roads are clear to the winter parking spots. There are some snowbanks that prevented us from driving up to the Little Jackson trailhead. Beyond the snowbanks, the roads are clearing up, but about a mile and a quarter past the trail head, the snow gets deep. Still 3+ feet deep when you get...

Whoops! My bad. :o Some of the alternate mnemonics are more memorable but definitely appropriate for a public forum.

Baxter: Chimney Route, Knife Edge, Baxter, Hamlin Ridge

When I was in Colorado four years ago, I saw a Marten. We were backpacking in RMNP and I went down to a stream a little ways from the campsite to filter some water for dinner. I just happened to look up in time to see its head pop up from behind a partially downed tree. It took me a second to...

    Snowshoes for Jackson?

I never do ;) It appears that I will be bringing the snowshoes. I went up Tumbledown twice in January/February, but this is my first year in Maine and I have no idea how long the snow pack stays in western Maine. Thanks guys.

Article on the guy who cut his hand off

A better knife would make it a helluva lot easier and less painful to cut through his arm. A first aid kit would have pain meds (same purpose) as well as something other than dirty shorts and a belt to hold the wound closed. Big thing though, is that a partner could help lift the rock or go...

Article on the guy who cut his hand off

ferrisjrf, giggy, & Hobbitling: He admitted that he was an idiot in the article. He ignored basic precautions that he normally took and went into the canyon underprepared. Doing that, along with not grouping up with the other people he saw on the trails and not leaving an ETA with someone...

    Snowshoes for Jackson?

No, not that Jackson, Maine's Jackson. North of Weld, right next to Tumbledown Mountain and Mount Blue. I'm going for a dayhike on Saturday and I'd rather not carry snowshoes if I can avoid it, but certainly don't want to posthole the whole way. So, am I gonna want the snowshoes?

Article on the guy who cut his hand off

Ralston was an idiot. He went on a solo hike without a first aid kit, without a decent knife, without leaving a trip itinerary with anyone, without telling anyone that he was hiking, much less when or where. Granted, he did a good job with what he had, and the boulder would have fallen on him...

    Lanterns

Only 4 D's? Please. 6 is standard. A few years ago, a guy I know got an 8 D maglite just to have a bigger one than everyone else. Then, to spite him, the guy's brother went out and got a 10 D one. :D

    Medicinal Benefits of Hiking

Since we're not talking about Olympians or professional athletes here, I would say that you can find a pretty good number of people who swim regularly but are kinda pudgy. Lipids are buoyant and so some fat will not severely impair your swimming, provided you've got some muscle underneath...

    Medicinal Benefits of Hiking

Arrrrrg! This is bringing back my least favorite part of my psych class. But hiking is good for you.* *I base this claim on absolutely nothing.

    bulk food

We use dried veggies, dried mashed potatoes, gravy packets (or even beef broth cubes), and frozen breakfast sausages to make shepherd's pie on backpacking trips. The sausages have to be of the precooked variety and sealed in an air tight packaging for transportation. It makes a great...

    Saddleback and the Horn 3/28/09

Saddleback and the Horn were my first 4k peaks. When I came out to Maine for school this year, I started off with a backpack from Saddleback to the Crockers. The ridge between Saddleback and the Horn is, in my opinion, one of the best above treeline hikes in the region.

Jamey is pleased with himself about self arresting Kevin and Marty the Moose Connor descending the Trough on Longs Peak Pictures linked due to size. Those are all people I know well (the second and third are my brothers) but I think that this one is a little more interesting. I met this guy...

I wear a 9.5 or 10 comfortably in any brand. I think that's the most average you can get.
