    Northern PA Backpacking

Does anyone here have any experience with backpacking in Northern/Northeastern PA? I've got an annual backpacking trip planned with a few friends for late October. In the past, we've gone to destinations in the Adirondacks, but due to people moving south, we've decided to do something in PA...

Governor announces State adds 69,000 acres to Adirondack Park

This is definitely good news. Did the thread for the petition get deleted?

hows the hiking been during the drought

A lot of Adirondack lakes are down... you can tell from the "bathtub ring" around the shore. I've seen ones that are pretty obviously down at least a foot from their normal depth. Also, higher in elevation, a lot of plants are suffering. Herbaceous vegetation is dying and drying up. Saplings...

    ADK Central Region backpacking ideas

The West Canada Lakes suggestion is a good one. With 5 days, you could easily see much of what the WCL Wilderness has to offer. The Pillsbury Mountain trailhead would be a good place to start and end your trip- that way you don't need to spot a second car. Pillsbury Lake, Sampson Lake, South...

Bushwhacking - How far will you go??

Changing your itinerary doesn't make a difference when you don't tell anyone else what the initial itinerary was to begin with... ;)

Bushwhacking - How far will you go??

Unmarked paths that take me where I was originally trying to get to anyways are boring. It's when a path is taking me in completely the opposite direction, and I have no idea where I'll end up, that things really start to get fun and exciting! :) I've definitely changed my entire itinerary for...

    summer weight hiking pants ?

EMS has a summer zip-off hiking pant that they sell for $45 that I've been very satisfied with. Very lightweight, and helps keep my legs cool. Only drawback is that the built in belt it comes with absolutely sucks (always comes undone on it's own) but it's easy enough to thread a new belt...

Long Pathl Feedback from Northern Catskills to John Boyd Thacer State Park

On state/public land, the trail is pretty well marked with paint blazes. It may not be well traveled, though- and some sections can be a little bit over grown. On private land/near developed areas, the quality of the marking varies considerably. Vroman's Nose is definitely a worth while...

    New National Geographic Vermont Map?

Looks like National Geographic is about to put out a 3rd map for Vermont, covering the Mount Mansfield/Stowe area: http://www.natgeomaps.com/ti_749 Anyone picked up a copy of this map? Hopefully it doesn't suffer from the same rush to completion that the other 2 Vermont maps went through...

    What camera do you use?

I use a Nikon Coolpix P7000. I got it on sale when the P7100 came out. Haven't been disappointed with it at all- takes great images in all light levels, and the color contrast is superb.

    vermont trails near Crown Point

Camel's Hump is a very nice hike. Probably my favorite of the Vermont 4,000 footers. :)

    vermont trails near Crown Point

Abraham, Ellen, and Camel's Hump all aren't too far from there, and are nice hikes. TCD's suggestion of the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness isn't a bad one either. In particulary, Treadway Mountain is accessible from Putnam Pond (I think you'll have to pay a day use fee). The views from Treadway...

Finishing the CHP and Fire Towers on Balsam Lake Mountain 6/8 - 6/11/12 (Catskills)

Continued from above... After chatting with the volunteers some more, I returned to the lean-to, grabbed my pack, and started down the mountain. In no time at all, I was back at the parking area, and starting down the road. It was another pleasant walk on a dirt road to the trailhead for the...

Finishing the CHP and Fire Towers on Balsam Lake Mountain 6/8 - 6/11/12 (Catskills)

Click Here To View Photo Gallery I've only had 2 Catskill High Peaks (Graham and Balsam Lake Mountains) and 1 Fire Tower Challenge peak (Balsam Lake Mountain) left for over a year. I could have easily finished both well before now... but I wanted to do it right. I had my eye on a 4 day, 30...

Another Lost hiker rescue on Washington

In one of my outdoor rec classes at Paul Smiths, we discussed this quite a bit. Having the slowest hikers lead is something that sounds nice in theory but rarely works in practice, especially with informal groups like those organized through online communication. It'd take a small group of...

Another Lost hiker rescue on Washington

This seems to be a common trend with informal hiking "meetup" groups... You end up with people with widely differing ability levels hiking together, and no one clearly in charge or bearing the responsibility for the safety of all those involved. Inevitably, without a clearly communicated plan...

3-day canoe route in the 'Daks region - suggestions?

Campsites on the Raquette River/Tupper Lake are first come, first serve. Both areas can get crowded on the weekend, since motorboat access is permitted. If solitude is the most important thing for you, I'll second AOC's suggestions of Little Tupper, Lake Lila, Lows Lake, or the Saint Regis...
