    Backpacking Checklist - feedback requested!

Just because you use biodegradable soap doesn't mean it's any better for the environment. Biodegradable soap has the same effect on water bodies as cow manure- it adds nutrients to the water, which in turn drives aging of the water body at an increase rate (cultural eutrophication). So it's...

    Backpacking Checklist - feedback requested!

I feel the opposite about pack covers. They are useless and I never carry them. When I used to use them, they never did a good job of keeping my pack dry. Now I just use a pack liner instead- keeps everything inside my pack dry. I also disagree about using soap- even if you're not depositing...

DEC proposing to close the main trail to Pokomoonshine from campground

Closing this trail wouldn't remove trail access to the fire tower. The trail was constructed because part of the road to the summit was on private property and wasn't open to the public. The state recently purchased the private property, however, and has plans to mark and maintain the old road...

    Bugs

They were pretty bad a week ago in the southwest Adirondacks. I'd say it's a safe bet you'll need your bug net for memorial day weekend if you're headed to the Adirondacks. In the Catskills, the bugs were out today on Belleayre mountain but not bad. I only swatted maybe a handful of black...

Sand Lake Falls, Woodhull Lake, and Bear Lake 5/9-5/11/12 (Adirondacks)

Click Here To View Photo Gallery I decided to spend some more time exploring the south west corner of the Park- an area that is still new to me and which I've infrequently visited. After visiting Bear Lake and Woodhull Lake last spring, and climbing Woodhull Mountain, I was curious to explore...

Is there a best red-lining map?

You're never going to find a single map that shows every trail. They just don't exist. Even professional maps, like the ones made by the AMC, ADK, and National Geographic, tend to be filled with errors. The best red-lining map is the one that you choose to work on for yourself. :)

Allen: a reminder it's at this time illegal to cross the bridge over the Hudson!

Just using the bridge is considered illegal. The bridge is in very bad shape right now, is closed to the public, and therefore is illegal to use. The legal route would be the water crossing mentioned by the website. And I don't think the 46ers are considering the "entire" route illegal- just...

Allen: a reminder it's at this time illegal to cross the bridge over the Hudson!

If there's any way to get hikers to follow the rules, it's to threaten their entitlement towards a patch. :) :p

    "Redlining" in the Adirondacks?

Here are my redline maps- the resolution isn't the best, but you get the idea. This is after 6 years worth of hiking in the Adirondacks. Lots of ground covered, lots of ground still to be covered:

    Sawteeth area

I briefly considered this option. I figure the snow would probably break my fall pretty well. But I was solo and there was only a few hours of daylight left, and I was pretty sure no one else was going to come down that trail again for a few days at least. Not the conditions one wants to risk...

    Sawteeth area

That ladder hung me up for like 30 minutes in the winter. I was descending towards UWJ, came to that cliff, and it was solid ice, covered in snow. No sign of the ladder. After carefully descending on the ice with my ax, I finally found the top of the ladder as was able to descend safely... I...

    "Redlining" in the Adirondacks?

A long term goal of mine is to redline the ADK High Peak's map, as well as eventually the entire Adirondacks, but it's not a high priority.

Reminder: Our impacts in the mountains are significantly higher this time of year!

Allow us to play devil's advocate in return: ;) :) :p Are saying that keeping heavy mud off of you, keeping your cleanup at the end of the day short, and keeping your car clean are all things that are more important that minimizing your impact in the backcountry? And that because everyone else...

Reminder: Our impacts in the mountains are significantly higher this time of year!

From the ADK website: From the AMC website: Spring time is when steep high elevation trails in the mountains are most susceptible to erosion and damage from hikers. If you've got an itch you can't scratch except by climbing mountains, please tread lightly. Do the "rock hop" where ever...

Easily accessible, must-see destination in the Adirondacks

There are no trails in the Adirondacks with a difficulty that falls between Jo and Cascade/Porter? ;)

Easily accessible, must-see destination in the Adirondacks

The most remote of the peaks in the Great Range is Marcy, and that's about 14 miles round trip from the Adirondack Loj. Despite being the longest distance-wise, Marcy is actually one of the easier peaks (provided the weather is good- above treeline is no where near "easy" in adverse...

    Sunset on Jenkins 4/18/12

Click Here To View Photo Gallery Decided to go three for three by watching my third sunset in as many days on Jenkins Mountain, another peak which, as with St. Regis and Catamount, I'd climbed frequently as a college student but hadn't visited in years. Rather than take the standard approach...
