Welcoming some suggestions for a 3-4 day trip in VT or NH

What's the likelihood of needing crampons on the Bonds? The group of people interested in the trip has grown, and not everyone has access to them...

Welcoming some suggestions for a 3-4 day trip in VT or NH

Yeah, I'm aware of the location of the new camping area- across the river on the east shore. No confusion on my part about where it's located. And the difficulties with crossing the river there. Sorry I didn't make that clear. The Forest Service seems to still refer to this camping area as...

Welcoming some suggestions for a 3-4 day trip in VT or NH

This is the pamphlet on backcountry camping rules that I found: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/recreation/camping/2010_backcountry_rules_web.pdf This is the pamphlet on backcountry campsites that I found...

Welcoming some suggestions for a 3-4 day trip in VT or NH

Yeah, this is the camping area I'm referring to. The publication is for all developed backcountry campsites and shelters, and has an asterisk next to all the ones that charge a fee- Franconia Falls has no asterisk (publication has no date, but looks pretty recent). Sounds like there's no...

Welcoming some suggestions for a 3-4 day trip in VT or NH

I'm reading online that there are 20 primitive campsites at Franconia Falls. I've found conflicting information about whether there is a fee or not to camp there? The Forest Service Publication says there is not, so I'm assuming that is accurate... How often does this area fill up? If we...

Welcoming some suggestions for a 3-4 day trip in VT or NH

Good to know! Thanks! So the Pemi is starting to sounds like a good option... It sounds like there is a single campsite at Franconia Falls? BTW, this trip would be sooner, like before the end of March (sorry for not clarifying). We'll probably have two solid days to climb peaks (whether...

    Appointment to FLTC

(copying this from my post in ADKHighPeaks!) Can you please, please, please make the new trail around Doubletop and over Wildcat in the Catksills a priority? :) Once the Cross Mountain trail is completed, the road walk between the Fall Brook and the Slide Mountain trailheads will be the only...

Welcoming some suggestions for a 3-4 day trip in VT or NH

A friend and I are planning to spend 3-4 days on an overnight trip in either VT or NH. We're trying to find a spot where we can easily hike in a few miles Friday evening, set up a base camp, and have 2 solid days worth of mountains to climb from said camp. The options for something like this...

    Time for New Crampons

I've used the contact straps in the Adirondacks for the past 5 winters, and have been pretty satisfied with them. They don't front point very well, but you can't really expect to front point efficiently in a flexible boot anyways. They've gotten me through about 99% of the on-trail conditions...

I should do this one again when I have a nice day to do it... views were limited when I did it in the fall of 2010...

NY's other high peak: Berlin Mountain 2/26/12 (NY/MA)

Click Here For More Photos Climbed Berlin Mountain in Eastern New York yesterday with a few friends. As it turns out, Berlin Mountain is something of a "high peak" itself- at 2818 feet, it's the highest peak in NY that isn't in the Catskill or Adirondack Mountains. The peak is pretty close to...

    A ski to Santanoni

I noticed those pegs in the Fall of 2010 as well. We couldn't figure out what they were for. Our best guess was that they were used to fasten something over the windows, but even that seemed like a stretch.

Request for Hike Suggestions in the Londonderry, VT area

Baker Peak is a bit further North of Bromley in the Big Branch Wilderness, accessible from the west side of the ridge, and also has some very nice views. View from the summit: https://picasaweb.google.com/116537596394442741068/BigBranchAndPeruPeakWildernessAreas#5642975496854486466

    A ski to Santanoni

Newcomb Lake and Camp Sanatnoni is a worthwhile destination any time of year. In the winter, I imagine the road often makes for great skiing. The whole area is well taken care of, and there are some very nice campsites and lean-tos on the lake. The lake also has gravely and sandy bottoms in...

27-second long nighttime JBL time-lapse video

Raymond didn't do it- the photographer is an ADK employee, Brendan Wiltse (I believe he's the current manager of JBL). I'll see if I can get him to provide some details... EDIT: Here's what he has to say about it:

    Spring comes to NH?

Normally, I'm all for a long and snowy winter, but this year I can't wait for spring. Probably has to do with the fact that I've finished the Winter 46, and this year I have to pay for heating and plowing. Guess I must be getting old! Can't wait to run around in the woods with no snow on the...

    Kahootla microspikes

They are great for packed snow, and, as long as you're careful, ice on terrain that is either flat or has a gentle grade. I wear them a lot when walking across frozen lakes- they keep my feet from sliding around as much, which wastes a lot less energy. As Kevin said, though, they aren't a...

    Au Revoir, Resolution Shelter

I can understand the emotional attachment people have to shelters- I too have a lot of emotional attachment to the Adirondack Lean-to. The Catlin Bay Lean-to on the Northville-Placid trail will always be important to me as it was the first place I ever camped out on a backcountry trip in, back...

    Street and Nye River Crossing

Probably not. Many of the smaller streams and rivers up here have open water right now. Generally, the crossing there isn't too difficult. I'd be wary if there had been warm temperatures in the days preceding your hike, though, so pay attention to the weather reports... :)
