    North & South Baldface - Saturday, 7/27/2013

Finally got a chance to do this fantastic loop in/near Evans Notch. We did the standard route, which is Baldface Circle Trail up South Baldface and then North Baldface. Very, very few bugs out today. No need for bug spray. Awesome views todays with only a couple of clouds. A bit hot though -...

    West Rattlesnake

Did this AWESOME easy day hike for the first time today. Took the Old Bridle Path up to the summit and then took the Ramsey Trail > Undercut Path back to 113 (followed by short road walk). This was a loop of about 2.2-ish miles. The Old Bridle Path was extremely well-maintained (it reminded me...

    the Saco

I cannot figure out for the life of me where the public take-in and take-out spots are for the Saco River in the North Conway/Conway area. I'm looking for the exact location of where I can put in and then ride CLASS I (easy class II also OK I guess) a few miles downstream. I'd like to do this...

Online site for large photo prints

I love prodigitalphotos.com. On a 0 beginner to 10 pro scale, I'd give them an 8 or 8.5. Much, much better than most local print shops and light years beyond Walgreens, CVS, etc.

    Favorite lightweight fleece pants?

Thanks for replies thus far! I should have also mentioned that they have to be socially appropriate..they would also be used in camp, in common areas within huts, etc.

    Favorite lightweight fleece pants?

I'm looking for a lightweight or midweight set of pants to wear in camp, at huts, etc when it is cold but not completely freezing (i.e. 30-50 degrees). Something that offers maximum warmth but doesn't take up much space in the pack. Any suggestions? The North Face TKA 100 pants are on my...

    Facebook's "The 4000-footer Club" group

Hello All, For those already on facebook, or those who should probably join facebook (hi Marty!), the "4000-footer club: Climing & Hiking in New Hampshire" group is a ton of fun. There are great trip reports, pictures, trail updates and questions posted to it daily. I highly recommend that...

    Cliff Walk - Newport RI

Was down in Newport, RI over the weekend and was shocked to find that 1/2 of the Cliff Walk was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. It will likely take years for the trail to be fixed. In fact, the damage is so bad it is very possible that it will never be fixed due to environmental concerns. This...

    Mt Major Land Protection Efffort

Thanks for heads up. I think VFTT needs to announce things like this. We have a ton of power as a group to help projects along like this. Without this being conserved, this could potentially turn into a Mt. Cabot!

    Upper Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Tour only year-round it seems. You don't need a guide for nearby Water Holes Canyon though (just get a Navajo Permit)

    Upper Antelope Canyon, Arizona

You’ve all seen it; it's probably the most photogenic, most photographed, most visited, most beautiful, most expensive, and most amazing slot canyon in the world….. Upper Antelope Canyon! This is a special place that has been on my radar for at least ten years, but for no good reason at all...

    TSA Regulations

Some tips on flying with gear: ~ EMS sells a gigantic black bag that is bigger than any piece of luggage I've ever seen. I bought a few and use 1 or 2 for every big trip I take out west. It holds all my gear (except fuel). This appears to be latest version of it...

    Grand Canyon in July

Since you haven't done much hiking in the desert it seems, I would seriously think about doing something else besides backpacking at the GC in July. I do a lot of hiking and backpacking out in that area, and it is BRUTUAL in the summer. Have you ever tried to sleep when it's 85-90 degrees at...

Coppermine Trail to Bridal Veil Falls - Saturday, May 4th, 2013

Coppermine Trail is now snow & ice free! A group of 8 of us did trail maintenance from the beginning to the end of this trail. Trail is in great shape and is 99.99% mud free. A few bugs near the end of the trail, but they weren't biting. The river is running high, so it's a bit harder than...

Article about Hugh Herr in NYTs

On a bit of a side note, I honestly can't believe why his story hasn't been an "I Shouldn't Be Alive" episode. Such a harrowing story.

Metacoment-Monadnock Trail from MA 9 to Holland Glen (0.5 mile)

Trail is in VERY poor shape and is in need of at least 2-3 hours of trail work by a small group. At least 1/2 dozen downed trees (due to Irene? not sure). Chainsaw required. Waterfall @ 0.5 mile point still looks decent, only 2 trees down to the side of the falls. Otherwise, looks good (except...

Some nice tributes to Sean Collier from the MIT Outing Club...

Five of my friends from my previous job were good friends with Sean. I met him at least once. Seemed like a great guy.
