    Garmin is buying Delorme

Are you all suggesting that Delorme will stop making the Atlas/Gazetteers? Because I'll cry.

Senator Jeb Bradley Bags Way More Peaks Than You Do

Met him at US forest service trail maintenance school this year. Nice guy who obviously cares about the great outdoors. Need more politicians like that for sure.

Longest you've driven for a hiking daytrip?

Nothing beats what Seema (who doesn't really post here anymore) did. About ten or so years ago, she & her husband Brian hiked Mt. Rainier and then drove 30 straight hours back east to make it to a wedding on time!

Longest you've driven for a hiking daytrip?

A friend and I had some real fun once when we were 24ish. Saturday: Drove from Salem, MA to Jaffrey, NH and then ran a 1/2 marathon which started at 11am. From there, we drove the rest of the day and evening and landed outside Baxter State Park at around 10pm. We drank a bottle of wine and...

    Saddleback Sale

This is so sad. It's arguably Maine's 3rd best ski resort. Gotta find a way to bring it back.

Old Rag - Shenandoah National Park - VA

Looks like a fun trip. Old Rag has been on my list for years. Maybe next year? Did you hike anything else in the park?

National Park Proposal East of Baxter Heating up

National Monument is the way to go. I'm actually hoping Obama designates 10 more monuments before he leaves office (like what Bill Clinton did)

    National Parks Overview

Thanks Stan. I'll add information on how I arrived at the top lists and the "Wow" factor. At the end of the day though, this is just one person's opinion (even though I have been to almost all of the national parks outside of Alaska). I actually was thinking about expanding the national park...

    National Parks Overview

Thanks, Sierra. I've added some information about this. I too have run into that problem. I can only imagine how many people show up to Yosemite to figure out that they can't hike Half Dome...

    National Parks Overview

Couldn't agree more. I'm actually a bit surprised at how many people lump all those other categories into their own definition of "national park". To me, the national parks are the crème de la crème of our national lands, and while the other categories include some truly amazing properties, most...

Is it possible to be a long-term hiker without resorting to lists?

I have a daughter now (her first birthday is next week), so I'm sure she'll slow me down from hiking as much in other states besides NH as she gets into school and routine activities, sports and such. However, I still think so many people in MA and NH don't put in the time & effort to plan hikes...

Is it possible to be a long-term hiker without resorting to lists?

I've hiked in just about every state, and I can honestly say that the White Mountain Guide is still the absolute best hiking guidebook I have ever used. Most books on hiking destinations in the US don't even come close.

Is it possible to be a long-term hiker without resorting to lists?

Here's one thing I think about sometimes...why keep doing round-after-round of NH/New England lists when there are... ...1500 miles of trails in the White Mountains region ...59 national parks in the US ...155 national forests in the US ...several dozen national monuments that have excellent...

New AMC Hut in Crawford Notch???

A few years ago, I stayed in eight or so huts in the alps. All were nicer than the AMC huts and all were cheaper too. The AMC hut prices are absurd, but in their defense, they are just playing the supply and demand game. The demand is there, unfortunately. I would love to see them have to try to...
