Trail Maintenance in the White Mountains

gas axe = chainsaw? For the US Forest service, I know you need training for ax, chainsaw and cross-cut ax The webspage has been updated quite a bit since yesterday with ideas from VFTT, various FB groups, US forest service, etc. Thanks to all who have pitched in...

Trail Maintenance in the White Mountains

Great idea on the youtube video for water bars! It's certainly a bit of an art form. Can't seem to find a really good one of BEFORE and AFTER on youtube though (I'll just make one the next time I do maintenance I guess) Fixed the typo as well. I'm going to avoid putting in information about...

Trail Maintenance in the White Mountains

I made this new page last night to (hopefully) help inspire some people to adopt some of the "orphaned" trails in the White Mountains. Can you please take a look and provide feedback and help me improve it further? I am going to add pictures of all the tools over the next few days (and also...

Katahdin Summit Hike selected in top ten in world by National Geographic

Haha fair enough And I suppose 95%+ of the car campers there intend on hiking anyway

Katahdin Summit Hike selected in top ten in world by National Geographic

Do they ask all car campers this question? If so, that's a bit absurd don't you think?

Katahdin Summit Hike selected in top ten in world by National Geographic

And on a side note, top 10 lists for such things are a bit silly. They should have done a top 100 list. That would have went viral and offered information on lots of beautiful peaks we haven't heard of...although not sure if that's a good thing or not as popularity could explode.

Katahdin Summit Hike selected in top ten in world by National Geographic

I used to be a big supporter of Baxter's strict policies, but lately, they have been ridiculous. They had a post the other day on facebook saying that Tablets & Smartphones shouldn't be used as flashlights. I agree with on trails, but for camping they are fine (they didn't specify their target...

The "one calendar day" seems silly to me. But sometimes traditions are silly

Saddleback may be closed this winter

some article said 350 jobs, which is probably substantial for that area

Saddleback may be closed this winter

I was thinking this could just be a marketing ploy to just make the news to help ensure that 2015/2016 winter traffic is strong. However, when people see this, they probably get nervous about buying season passes, which would really hurt their cash flow. So now I'm thinking this is just plain...

2nd Annual Spring Gathering! ~ Madison, NH (weekend of May 8-10, 2015)

Bumping this up so that people can starting thinking about whether they want to join this year! We had a turnout of about 25 people last year, and we'd love to turn this into an annual VFTT tradition (especially since so many VFTT annual traditions have sadly faded in recent years)

    Tuckerman Ravine Hike and Sled

Been on my to-do list for a long time! Have any of you tried zipfy's? I am going to attempt the Sherbourne on those soon since they have greater control than most sleds. I used them on the Doublehead Ski Trail, top to bottom, and they were incredible.

Hiking the 4000-Footers of NH in Winter

Just wanted to note that Zipfy's are only really appropriate for backcountry ski trails, closed mountain roads, etc. Not really appropriate for 4k trails where people are using swiss-bobs and sleds like that.

Hiking the 4000-Footers of NH in Winter

Richard, Have you tried using a 'zipfy' sled yet? I forgot to ski last winter because I was having so much fun on one of those.

Hiking the 4000-Footers of NH in Winter

Thanks for the correction. I've updated the page to remove all language that stated that skiing didn't count towards the 4ks as per the AMC 4000-footer commmittee.
