Last Chance for Vermont 3000 footer

heavy sigh ---- I would guess they try to limit access due to danger of ice flying off the blades in winter (or the bird debris???) Or when they fall down at the end of their thankfully short life?

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Good point! IT's like taking a picture of the Pemi River itself in a drought - looks easy to cross but most of the time is pretty dangerous

Franconia Ridge Trail Between Liberty And Haystack

this is close and fairly recent: http://www.newenglandtrailconditions.com/nh/viewreport.php?entryid=25367 likely VERY icy especially after all this rain and the refreeze Unlikely you would need snowshoes - there's just very little snow up there this year

Hiking in the extreme cold this weekend?

I usually wait to start until late morning or mid-day so things can "warm up" on the coldest of cold days, like this coming Saturday :)

    Moosilauke

i'm not sure i went up it last year, but, the year(s) before, the plow went up around that loop at the knoll at the trailhead (basically up to the trailhead sign at Breezy Point). I wouldn't count on it (that final 1/4 mile) being plowed (like many trailheads) right after a storm, though.

    dual purpuse boot

OK - :) it's not clear what you're planning to do - I used the skis to ski the flat approaches such as Lincoln woods, Sawyer road, Zealand Road, etc that are flat. (if good snow, you can go higher, but, just skiing the approaches is what I did mostly). Then, I snowshoed up from there...

    nordic sking--anywhere?

The Mt Cardigan (lodge side) XC ski trails looked terrific. I skinned up the lower ones to get to the more down mountain trails last Saturday. Coverage was excellent.

    dual purpuse boot

I have had decent luck using heavier XC ski boots for snowshoeing and XC skis. They do not work well (for me) when barebooting. So, I have carried snowshoes when I have XC skied into a 4K trailhead. I have used well-insulated NNN-BC boots but then switched boots/skis/bindings over to...

Has anyone skiied Moosilauke this winter?

Ha - yeah - even when Cardigan is "bad", it's good. I was debating the Carriage Rd or Cardigan and decided on Cardigan because of proximity to where I rode in the morning (Ragged). I was surprised at how much snow Cardigan got.

Has anyone skiied Moosilauke this winter?

Cardigan may not be a good guide, but, snow was freaking deep and dense last Monday on the usual down-mountain ski trails: http://newenglandtrailconditions.com/nh/viewreport.php?entryid=24169

    nordic sking--anywhere?

From past years, here's my prediction for backcountry XC after the Tues storm: anything relatively flat with few waterbars/drainages will be in play. I would think the East Side Trail (out of Lincoln Woods) as far as the Wilderness boundary would be good; Zealand Rd will also be good. Any...

Stevens Brook Trail - Carr Mountain Ridge

HI All, I visited the east side of the trail today. I followed the road (Basin Brook Road) from its junction with Stinson Lake Rd. AS it turns out, I then had to cross Stevens Brook because the trail is on the north side of the river. Anyway, on the return I followed the trail to the...

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

yes - no change to the historic RR trestle. The old trail (the RR bed to the east of it) that was closed still gets good use. It is obvious that the scrub placed on it has LONG been removed. The old site of the suspension bridge is a VERY popular "bootleg" camping area (both sides - within...

Stevens Brook Trail - Carr Mountain Ridge

HI Jazzbo - yes - very much the east-side entrance I figured I saw from the road... I was hesitant to try due to activity from that side. I will try again tho!!!! Excellent info!!!! I am guessing that box canyon is what that photog referred to as one of the best ones he's seen in the video...

Stevens Brook Trail - Carr Mountain Ridge

wow - interesting info - I have to say, I do really like finding the old names carved (in the old letters!!!). So many neat areas to explore! One can spend HOURS pondering the old maps and old trail descriptions.... some just disappear quickly and others are evident LONG after closure... :)

Stevens Brook Trail - Carr Mountain Ridge

HI - yes - I tried it from the west a couple of weeks ago: http://www.newenglandtrailconditions.com/nh/viewreport.php?entryid=23204 I tried from the Stinson Lake area first but was hesitant to poke around for the start of the trail (I assume it's the old road I could see from the road) because...

    Tecumseh view clearing

I finally got up Tecumseh today after a LONG hiatus. We went from Welch/Dickey up to Foss & Green to Tecumseh. We couldn't help but notice how HUGE the artificially-cleared communications tower area was.....and how it's always been that way..... crickets..... :)
