Hawthorne Falls - the perennial questions -? How/where - have they disappeared????

HI! Good pics - that's what I was expecting. Any idea how close it is to the junction of the two streams in that same area? I *KNOW* I was .5 miles from the ridge. I don't have any good pics - just some really narrow stepped falls that didn't go as high. I have 2 tracks on my gps and...

Hawthorne Falls - the perennial questions -? How/where - have they disappeared????

Hi All! I have now tried twice to find Hawthorne Falls. Last weekend I went uphill from the Gale River Trail at the Garfield Stream junction. Many cool cascades and shelves - WOW! AND lots of big rocks with DEEP mossy holes in-between. Around 3200' woods got really thick near the...

Hiker missing in NH Whites - Unfortunate ending (Claire Marie Cocuzzo)

Gosh - it's hard to imagine what happened. I was on the Gale River Trail again today and noticed the ATV (F&G's) tracks in the mud up (from the parking lot area) to the start of the re-route.

Hiker missing in NH Whites - Unfortunate ending (Claire Marie Cocuzzo)

yes JustJoe - that's approximately how the stream looked last Saturday morning (Oct 10) after a lot of rain. You're picture gives a good idea of how the Garfield Stream flows. VERY different from the Gale River which I didn't cross or see, but, I am sure was roaring. The elevation of the...

Hiker missing in NH Whites - Unfortunate ending (Claire Marie Cocuzzo)

so sad..... I'm confused about the location: the reroute of 2011 eliminated the (2 big) crossings of the Gale River. Of course, the old trail (if followed) *does* cross it twice. The Garfield Stream (at 2.2 miles up the trail) is fairly minor - a rock-hop with (as I recall) no large...

Hiker missing in NH Whites - Unfortunate ending (Claire Marie Cocuzzo)

yes - conditions were VERY wintry into Saturday morning in that area - I was surprised how slippery things were above 3K feet. I find it hard to believe, if she were on-trail, that someone would not have found her if she had a problem - there were SO MANY hikers in that area.

    Fatality on Falling Waters Trail

I am surprised there weren't more rescues - Saturday was pretty slippery due to the light snow on the trail in the Galehead/Garfield area and there were a tremendous number of people.

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Yes - many knowledgeable users did go to the site :) Unfortunately that article doesn't mention, for comparison's sake, a bridge in another wilderness area that has been replaced AND repaired in recent years for safety reasons: the Dry River suspension bridge - a REAL beauty!!!! :)

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

I hear you, but.... my town owns plenty of forest properties and they are managed responsibly :) I *do* like having access to them and some of them have really nice non-offensive bridges :)

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Build a fence? Wall? Maybe razor wire would "Free the Pemi" from humankind? I believe the state (local control) should be allowed to manage this forest but that's not going to happen either.

The Bridges of the East Branch Truck Road (aka Pemi East Side Trail)

good pics! They do look quite costly - and yet money is too tight to maintain bridges further in?????

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

I would think the bridge as is would be fine - those logs are HUGE. I would not want to ford that crossing without a couple of waterproof toe tags....

Cedar Brook Trail reroute in progress???

That spot near camp 24 was a little challenging to ski last winter - just really had to pay attention there :) There are other gullies that present challenges as well (need to turn quickly once around the stream). We did it westbound (Hancock Notch to Lincoln Woods)

    Tecumseh view clearing

Hmmm, on a peak with a ski area with great SWATHS of clearcuts (aka "ski trails"), a large area of satellite/radio towers, etc., it seems kinda silly to get so upset about clearing for hiker views. Perhaps the $ spent on kiosk(s) and signs could be better spent? (I haven't seen the actual...

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

no - mid-summer a 17-year-old recent HS grad from Lowell, MA, was stepping across a rock at Franconia Falls (around 3.5 miles from the Lincoln Woods Trailhead via the Lincoln Woods Trail to the Franconia Falls Trail) and slipped in and drowned. Several years ago (maybe more), a guy slipped in...

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

re: DayTrip - interesting!!! I can see why they put that there given all the people I saw walking to/from the falls from the parking area (3 miles)!!! in bathing suits a week or two ago. Every time I see one of those similarly-titled "Water Safety" signs, and there are many, I can...

Cedar Brook Trail reroute in progress???

hmmmm... about a month ago I didn't notice that - ? Must be recent? Perhaps where there are already herd paths bypassing the brook crossings?

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

I am wondering what the objective of these hikes might be.... it is nice that they *are* taking potential users out there, but, the water will be (unrealistically) low if they are interested in see what it is like to cross without a bridge. As a semi-frequent user of the bridge, I would rather...
