    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Has anyone here driven past or tried to use the Lincoln Woods Trailhead lately? Cars far up and down last Saturday, as was the Hancock Notch Trailhead - ? It's getting like the Falling Waters/Franconia Ridge Trailhead!!! How are these people legally parking roadside when there are signs...

New AMC Hut in Crawford Notch???

Non-profits, such as the AMC, need to move money (all legally) to make sure over X years (with carryover allowable by law) there is no "profit." As a result, there are enormous (but, I'm sure, "competitive" as far as non-profits go) salaries for the big brass. That's the way it works. The...

New AMC Hut in Crawford Notch???

At $100/night with 50 customer capacity, this is an income stream for the AMC. Trails, trail maint, etc., are all costs. It is easy to see why this is a priority for the AMC rather than using its influence to keep trails and bridges open (such as the Thoreau Falls bridge situation). Let's...

Poop in the campsite: a tragedy in four acts

Gross! Too many people in the woods! The *last* time I used the pit toilet at the Basin (over 10 years ago) someone smeared #2 on the latch. You can try to clean it off but the memories will never go away. :(

    Mittersill Mtn. Trail?

Here's some info. I did it about a week ago and although access is not marked, it is easy enough to find your way up and find the yellow blazes: http://www.newenglandtrailconditions.com/nh/viewreport.php?entryid=21739

Reminder - NH - Hands free device while driving law in effect

I find the WAZE app on my phone very helpful for finding hazards in the road - and alerting others! Probably doesn't comply with the law but in this nanny state I am willing to risk a ticket for using it!!! (PLUS it often shows where police are!!!)

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Basically, there is nothing that can be done if they want to remove it. If they really wanted input they could read this message board.

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

The 1963 A.M.C. White Mountain Guide (page 204) states, "At 4.7 m. the trail crosses the East Branch on a new (1962) 60-ft bridge and soon joins the Wilderness Trail at North Fork Junction,..." So it would seem that the bridge is already more than 50 years old. ????? ?????? ??????

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, "public comment" is merely an item to be checked off on the task list prior to bridge removal. Same old same old.

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Unfortunately, public input was accepted but not considered when the other bridges were removed. Same again. "We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which...

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

On Google Earth it does look as though about a half mile east of the TFT/Wilderness Tr junction the river does look possibly crossable if a bootleg trail is created from the Wilderness Trail to bypass the bridge site and that crossing. I will look into the option this summer.

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

Thanks for posting. This essentially closes the Thoreau Falls Trail. Unfortunately, the alternative for a lowlands traverse is the Shoals Pond Trail which is basically a wetland as the bog bridges disintegrate into the marsh. It is sad to see the wilderness become restricted to fewer and...

    Rangers taking pictures of plates?

hmmmmm... I wonder what would happen if you started taking pictures of the Rangers and their trucks????? I've taken pics of govt trucks before at some of the TH/Trails before .... maybe they have a forum where they mention that and the other Rangers get creeped out? The signs do say the lot...

Greeley Ponds via Waterville Valley Hike - 01/02/2015

Thanks for the report! But, I am a bit disappointed that it doesn't seem to be skiable any more.... this was one of my first "backcountry" ski routes (this and the Pemi east side/wilderness trail *loop* :( ). How bad are the uphill sections in both directions if you take your skis off...

    Post Holes vs. Snowshoe Tracks

First, if we *EVER* get some actual pow :) Then lay down a nice skin track - will go over random postholes pretty nicely AND fit in a snowshoe track.
