    Water situation at Guyot Campsite?

Guyot spring was just fine Saturday afternoon. Tanked up there on my Zealand to LW hike. Chatted with the caretaker for a bit. I asked about filtering, he said he was "required by law" to recommend filtering, but he drank the water unfiltered. I didn't bother filtering either... I had forgotten...

Zealand - Lincoln Woods car shuttle/swap this weekend?

I was thinking of doing a Zealand/Bonds traverse this weekend (in either direction). I was wondering if someone similarly inclined would be interested in meeting early at one of the trailheads, and one of us taking the others car to the other end and hiking from there. Then we'd each hike our...

Not pushing (my family's) limits: smaller WMNF outings sought

A little south of Conway, the Great Hill fire tower in Tamworth is an easy little hike, with an excellent view from the top. Especially nice in the fall for leaf-peeping. Drive to the top of Great Hill Rd from the village center, park at the intersection at the top, then hike up the snow mobile...

    Bad dog owner (me)

I know that the rocks we all hike over in the Whites can be very tough on dog paws, especially the continuous broken rock hopping above tree line. I'm always careful to ramp up with shorter hikes each season to toughen up Mia's paw pads before tackling longer or rougher hikes. On Saturday we...

Zealand - Lincoln Woods car swap this Saturday (6/16)?

I was thinking about hiking a Bonds traverse this Saturday, 6/16. Is anyone interested in meeting that morning to swap cars and drive to the opposite trailhead, so we'd hike (in opposite directions) and each wind up back at our own car? I'm not picky on which direction I hike it. You can stay at...

    Isolation

Mia and I hiked Isolation last Friday, via the Glen Boulder trail. It's a fair bit more climbing than via Rocky Branch, but great views all around (except when it's fogged in, like last Friday...). No water crossings, and the trails are in excellent shape. Someone has recently dug out the water...

Geneva puts the final pin in her map, Owls Head on 5/12!

Congrats! Congratulations, Geneva! Mia and I saw you guys on the trail (Mia's the yellow dog with the red pack). Mia would've definitely shared a summit cookie if we knew it was #48! (Although they sort of turned into biscuit soup after the last brook crossing...). We also saw Ed'n Lauky on...

Hiking in the winter with a Lab

Mia, my 2 year old Labradoodle, loves winter hiking (and skijoring). She has lab-like paws (big, webbed toes) but a slightly sparser coat. Single digit temperatures don't seem to be a problem, but I have to keep a close eye to keep her out of open water. We use this waxy stuff called "Mushers...

Rocky Branch, but not Isolation, 12-10-11

Sunday was a beautiful day, clear, low 20's, no wind. Perfect for a ski, but lacking snow decided on a hike instead. Mia (my four-footed hiking companion) and I intended to climb Mt. Isolation (she "needed" it for her canine 4K - what a great excuse to hike), but we didn't quite make it... No...

    Middle Carter, 11/20/2011

Trails: Imp Tr (south fork), North Carter Tr, Ridge Tr. Conditions: Almost no ice, even along ridge. Easy bare booting the whole way. Mud lower down was not too bad, either.

    Cannon - 10/29/2011

Cannon Mtn by Kinsman Ridge Trail from tramway parking lot. Got an early start to beat the nor'easter and were rewarded with clear skies, no wind, and low 30's - calm before the storm! 1-2" crunchy snow on the ground the whole way. Very icy in the middle section, where the hiking trail...

    Spruce cones on Moriah, 7/9/2011

Thanks! I didn't realize until after I got home, looking at the pictures, that they were different trees. The spectrum of colors of the cones from white to blue to purple to red led me to believe they were all variations of the same tree while I was passing through.

    Spruce cones on Moriah, 7/9/2011

We only had the morning available for hiking, so got off to an early start at the Stoney Brook trailhead. Forecast was for clear and warm, but it had rained hard all night and the summits were still cool and shrouded in heavy fog. Stoney Brook Trail is a really nice approach to the...

    Dog Day on Franconia Ridge: Toby's 47th & 48th! 7/9/11

Great TR, thanks! So sorry Mia and couldn't join the fun this time.

    Moosilauke via Beaver Brook, 7/3/2011

It's been a while since I've been up Moosilauke, and I've never been up Beaver Brook, so seemed like a good half-day hike. Forecast was for afternoon thunderstorms, so figured we'd get an early start and try to beat the weather. It almost worked... Despite it being a holiday weekend there were...

Franconia Ridge Loop (more dogs!) 6/19/2011

I'm usually jinxed when it comes to Franconia Notch - on many a hike it's been sunny everywhere else but when I get to the notch it's socked in with fog or rain. But Sunday was looking to be spectacular, and like Boston sports teams maybe my curse was finally to be lifted. Boy was it ever...

Wildcats via ski trails with dogs?

Since they allow dogs on the Gondola, I can't imagine the staff would mind them on the ski trails.

A very foolish errand - Operation MEB 8-27-10

But Dave, you got the 27 eight-by-ten color glossy photographs with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was...

    Lower Nanamocomuck (XC) 2/9/08

Skied from Albany Covered Bridge to Bear Notch Rd and back. Conditions are fantastic, 6-8" new snow on packed base. A few minor water crossings, all easy to ski around. Used skinny skis with metal edges, which was a little overkill - plain old touring skis would be fine here. Someone...

    Pine Martens

A couple of times over the last few years hiking the Whites I've seen the flash of a yellow/orange mammel out of the corner of my eye. Too big and wrong color to be a squirrel, wrong shape and color for a fox. But since I never got a good look I didn't think about it too much. Yesterday, hiking...
