Plan to Build a Private Highway Bisecting Maine Draws Mixed Reviews

Ever driven from Orono to Houlton? Not a lot of economic development along that stretch of rural interstate. What makes you think this private road will be any different? In my opinion, this toll road definitely looks like it is designed to benefit Canadian truckers and make a few people a...

    Ranger down, on Rainier

According to the Portland Press Herald, he was originally from Patten, Maine. http://www.pressherald.com/news/Maine-native-killed-in-Mt-Rainier-climbers-rescue.html

    2010 Fall Foliage thread

OJI and Doubletop from Kidney Pond. Colors looked a little muted in Baxter this weekend but the evening light helped warm things up... there was a bit of snow on Katahdin all weekend.

    Foliage Thread

Color was decent in the Grafton Notch area on Saturday. View from Puzzle Mountain. Drove through the Rangeley area on Sunday and the colors seemed a bit more vivid up there.

We have a 2010 Outback here at work. My only major complaint is that roof rack. Other than that, it's pretty nice. Our '03 Subaru does seem to chew through tires but only 15 thousand is pretty ridiculous. I think we have some sort of BFGoodrich on it right now... Advantage T/A maybe? I had...

Western MA is pretty nice! I had a buddy who lived there for several years and I always enjoyed visiting. There is some nice hiking there and it's convenient to both VT and NY. Hope you enjoy it. Our '03 Subie is at 130,000 and still running pretty good. The only issue we've had was the...

    coyotes... Nova Scotia

We were at the paddle in lean-to on the lower pond in July and he came through our site as well. I made a bit of noise and told him to get lost but he seemed unconcerned with my presence. He poked around for probably about 15 - 20 seconds and then casually left. He was surprisingly big but...

    Goose Eye 8/1/2010

If you are still undecided on which trail to take, I'll just try to nudge you towards the Wright Trail. It's very nice. Enjoy the hike whichever way you go.

    BSP maps

I think this is a decent map too. I picked mine up at The AT Cafe in Millinocket last year.

Descending the Dudley Trail - Katahdin

I agree with the above. All of my photos looking down the Dudley Trail look a lot like aerial photographs... certainly doable but steep. Enjoy it!

    Trailhead for Mt Abraham, Maine

If coming from the south on RT 27 into Kingfield, turn left on West Kingfield Street (next to hardware store). Pavement ends about 3.5 miles from RT27. At approximately 6 miles, turn left and cross two bridges over Rapid Stream. After crossing the bridges, the road forks... keep right. The...

    Snowshoeing near Bethel, ME

One of the coolest short hikes in the area is Table Rock on Baldpate. Pretty nice view of Old Speck with not too much effort. I can't remember how long it is though. Maybe 2 miles round trip? Park at the AT crossing on Route 26 and head for Baldpate. Using the Table Rock Trail and the AT...

Fall colors and seasonal change thread

No, it's not near Evans Notch. It's actually about a mile or two from the Little Jackson Trailhead (Little Jackson is the mountain in the background). The nearest town is Weld, Maine. It's certainly a picturesque spot.

Fall colors and seasonal change thread

A few from Little Jackson this past Thursday (10/8). The overcast sky muted the colors a bit... I also think western Maine is a little past peak. Mountain View Cemetery: Webb Lake: Tumbledown Mountain:

    Tumbledown Trio - 7/6/09

Hey Marty- Such a sweet area. A couple of new trails cleared in the past couple of years. I need to get back up there and check them out. I really enjoyed the pics from one of my favorite spots! Kevin
