Maine 03/28/06 Avery & West Peak of Bigelows

I'll second what others have said. Making a loop out of the FW's trail and Horns Pond trail is easily among my favorite dayhikes I've done in New England... I didn't go to north horn though... guess I'll have to go back because everyone seems to love that peak. The hike up to Cranberry Peak...

    Ladders on Maine's Sugarloaf/Spauling/Abraham?

I've been up Abraham twice and both times I thought to myself that the upper portion of the Fire Warden's Trail would be easy to lose if there was a lot of snow or if visability was low. Actually, even once you're back in the woods the blazing is minimal. Super fun hike though!

    BSP - Chimney Pond - 3.9-13.06

Very cool photos. I never get tired of looking at pics of Katahdin... winter pics are even better. My boss has visited Baxter the last two winters and is thinking of planning a trip next year for a few of us in the office... keeping my fingers crossed! Again, nice pics and a very nice report...

    Grafton Loop Western side

If the views from Puzzle and Baldpate are any indication, this should be a great trail.

    Mt abraham...amazing last half mile

Another Abraham fan here. I love it because there are hardly ever any people on it and the views are impressive. The trail is a bit tough to follow in places... I wouldn't want to try to find my way from the summit back to treeline in bad weather. Nice report on a nice mountain.

    Deuce Bigelow

Nice pictures. I really like the pic of Avery... it's looks so big and mean. I hiked Avery, West, and South Horn back in September and took a friend up Cranberry last month. I hope to get back up there for a winter hike up West and Avery soon. Nice Report!

Easy Snowshoeing close to Sunday River?

I'll second the Sunday River XC Ski Center... a great place for some easy snowshoeing. I did Puzzle Mountain last month and it was 3.2 miles to the summit (which is very nice) but there are some really nice ledges with a fantastic view to the north about 2/3rds of the way up.

Interesting (and accessible) winter hikes in Western and Northern Maine?

I did Cranberry from the Stratton area two weekends ago. We were able to drive a Subaru Outback almost to the trailhead. We had about a 5 minute road walk. There is a small sign for the Bigelow Range Trail... if you pass the mill, you've gone too far. I think mileage was 3.2 one way and a...

    Site for Snow Totals?

http://www.nohrsc.nws.gov/interactive/html/map.html I like the interactive snow model... it allows you to zoom in pretty close and to customize different parameters ranging from snow depth to snow water equiv to snow melt. It even has forest density. Cool stuff. Enjoy!

Wow... Caribou got 31 inches in a 48 hour period. That's pretty impressive. Thanks for the link!
