    Katahdin cam!

www.katahdincam.com I found this pretty cool webcam of Katahdin today. There is a time lapse movie for a day in November that you can download that I found rather neat. Every morning when I come into work, I always check the Mount Washington webcam... now I can check the Katahdin cam as...

    Hiking Greylock in the Berkshires?

I hiked the thunderbolt trail in September and it was much steeper than I had anticipated. I think I may have under estimated the trail and was prepared to be dissapointed with Greylock but the opposite was true... a really great mountain in my opinion. I do remeber the trailhead being a bit...

Bigelow: Cranberry Pk and Peak above Horns Pond 11/14

Another Bigelow fan here... I hiked most of he ridge back in August but didn't make it to Cranberry Peak. The next time I'm up there I'll be sure to explore that side of the range. The Bigelows are great!

    MSR's new Lightning Ascents

I have a pair of Ascent Evo's and they have been great. I've never had a piece of MSR gear let me down and I can't imagine that these are of poor quality. Just my opinion on MSR stuff in general as I don't have first hand experience with this particular model.

    snow amounts ?

http://www.nohrsc.nws.gov/interactive/html/map.html NOAA's interactive snow model is pretty cool... I use it often. Simply drag a box around the area of interest and it will zoom in. You can map various parameters such as snow-water equiv, snow depth, snowpack temp, etc. They even have...

Gathering 8.5 - narrowing it down

The GO compound sounds perfect. Guess I'll be testing out my recently purchased 3-4 season MSR tent!

    snowshoes

I'll second the MSR snowshoes. The attachable floatation tails allow you to tailor the shoe to the conditions. I've also had more than one person recommend MSR's over the traditional aluminum frame shoes... the plastic deck design that MSR uses is supposed to float better. Not sure how true...

    Good Geology Reads, Please

Someone beat me to it... The Roadside Geology series is pretty good. The Roadside Geology of Maine was the first book I read when I moved here last year.

    glacial cirque on carter ridge?

Cirques are formed primarily due to frost wedging and are often associated with glaciers because the processes that form cirques are common geologic processes in glacial regions... therefore, a cirque is not always derived from a glacier. Small cirques are excavated beneath snowbanks even where...
