    Shameless peak bagging in Baxter

As others have said, take the Hamlin Ridge trail up to Hamlin. It is a great open ridge with impressive basins on both sides. The view towards the Knife Edge and Baxter Peak is among the best i've seen in the northeast. I'd only take the Saddle Trail if weather looks to be a factor...

Labor Day Weekend in Baxter State Park

Nice report and pics. I was on Katahdin on Tuesday and whenever I could tear my eyes away from the splendors of the Great Basin my gaze always seemed to land on The Traveler... definately my next hike in BSP! Again, great pics and report.

Least favorite trails in the Whites

I couldn't agree more... this is easily my least favorite trail that I've been on in the whites.

    ME Mountain Works- Portland, ME

Bummer x 2... I liked that store. :( The Commercial Street location doesn't have a lot of gear. I guess I'll have to stop and check out the deals though.

    snowpants

I just bought a pair of North Face Apex pants. Very similar to the REI Mistrals I mentioned above. I got them at TNF outlet for 50 dollars. If you have an outlet store near you, you may want to check these out as well. Good luck!

    snowpants

I have a pair of softshell pants - REI Mistrals - that when coupled with gaitors and a warm under layer make excellent winter hiking pants. I got them from the clearence section of the REI website for around 50 dollars. They are well made and have served me well... I've been meaning to pick up...

    Have You Ever Defended Hiking?

Maybe it's just the people I surround myself with but I've never had anyone look at me funny when I say I've been hiking or am planning on going hiking. Most people I talk to show interest in the mountains and often want to come along with me the next time I'm out. As for "people not getting...

firewarden's trail to mt abraham (me)?

I like to think of the vague directions as part of the Maine hiking experience. ;)

    Mt Katahdin..another cool report

Ahh... the classic butt shimmie... :D Great trip report. Counting down the days until my trip begins on September 5.

firewarden's trail to mt abraham (me)?

Dave is spot on as usual... I'll just add that if you turn right at the trailhead T and have a Maine DeLorme you can shave a considerable amount of distance from the early part of the trail as the road will cross the trail again. The road is a little rougher past the trailhead but wasn't a...

    Katahdin

Excellent trip report... I will be going to Baxter in a few weeks and saw Katahdin for the first time yesterday. It is an amazing looking mountain and I was 20 miles away in Sherman Mills! When it first came into view all I could think was WOW! Glad you had an excellent trip... I enjoyed...

    VFTT Gathering 8.5 - Maine

I voted for Stratton/Kingfield because of the close proximity to Abraham and Bigelow... although Rangeley isn't that far and would also be nice with Saddleback and numerous other (albeit smaller) mountains around. If you think about it, activities in the Kingfield/Stratton area are easily...

    Baxter State Park, August 5-8

Great report and pictures! I really love the last photo... 4 moose out for a swim with Katahdin in the background. Can't get much better than that. I'll be making my first trip to BSP in a few weeks... your pics have me excited... although I've been excited for some time now.

    Bigelow Loop Parking?

I was there this past Saturday and had no problems parking near the fire wardens trail. Easily room for 6 or 7 cars... maybe more. There looked to be plenty of parking at the AT crossing too. Also, the road down to pond outlet didn't look too bad. I could have easily driven it in my Tacoma...
