Tripod - light enough to pack

I have a Leki hiking pole with a cap that unscrews to reveal a screw that I'm sure is compatible with most cameras. Rarely use it for my camera but it telescopes like most hiking poles.

New WMNF Policy For Trail Adopters

How long is the parking pass good for? If its tied to the calendar year instead of the following fiscal year it can really shortchange someone who finishes the 16 hrs. in Sept. Thanks to all who do trail maintenance and you can park in my driveway if that helps ... but it's over 100 miles away...

    Best hikes in the Berkshires

Windsor Jambs in Windsor SF might offer a 5 year old an interesting look at a dramatic little river canyon for modest effort. I find an enjoyable and likely educational walk, especially for a child for whom the experience would seem especially appealing, to be at Audubon Sanctuaries where I...

Grand Canyon - Phantom Ranch trip planning

I like the north rim but it is 1000' feet higher than the south rim, which makes it cooler and it is also less crowded. I've always thought a N-S thru hike would be the way to go but the logistics of getting around back to the other side, if you need to retrieve a car, can be difficult.

Hiking under the influence (of electronics)

The constant dependence on the stimulation of electronic devices, whether on the trail or behind the wheel, seems to be an irreversible shift in culture and, in some instances, manners and safety. Through all this I've developed a greater admiration for hermits.

    Moose are out !

Another thing to like about moose.

    Logistics Of The Mahoosuc Range

I have 6 editions of the WMG, the 25th (1992) being a major source during our peak hiking days. For the fun of it I obtained 3 prior editions and, to keep "current" especially on new technologies and maps introduced in later editions, I bought two newer editions. My observations is that there...

Cog looking at running snow cats to the summit

Maybe to watch other hikers moon the cog. I wonder how long it'll be before that appears on Facebook ... a new app feature, butt recognition.

REI seriously changing it's Business Model

Great idea for REI which doesn't have stockholders or investors to answer to, only the dictates of high intentions. It is a cooperative and hence, the annual dividend. Don't know if this will boost sales as the market seems to prefer price or image over quality and the source. It is a...

    Mt Equinox in Vermont

The traditional route is less than breathtaking and a long day trip for just this hike. One overnight and you can also hike Dorset ... which, except for the access roads, I also found less than breathtaking though at the time a bit of a challenge to find the summit register.

    Is Bushwhacking for you ??

You raise two good points in the initial post: 1. A hiking partner for bushwhacking - An experienced hiking partner can teach you a lot if they have reasonable leadership experience and are willing to teach you rather than simply lead the way. You have a lot of experience yourself but consider...

Things are heating up over ATV trails in Nash Stream

I've used portions of ATV and snowmobile trails while hiking, skiing or snowshoeing lots of times and have usually gotten friendly waves when we meet. Those users build and maintain trails and try to teach an ethic much as we non-motorized recreationalists do. The holier than thou attitude of...

Tracking a lynx near Moosehead Lake

You may be able to enlarge it by copying it to another application. I copied it to Word and enlarged it but there isn't much detail to glean, as is often the case in the field. The lynx track is 2-3" larger than a bobcat which in turn is only slightly larger that a domestic cat ... except for...

Tracking a lynx near Moosehead Lake

Those who add tracking or wildlife observation to their hiking experience will enjoy this backtrack of a lynx and what it had in its mouth. https://www1.maine.gov/wordpress/insideifw/2018/02/21/learning-lynx-winter-months/

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

We've traveled I-90/94 through Wisconsin a couple times this past year, once enroute hiking and paddling the mountains and lakes north of Superior (Eagle Mtn., MN high point is only 2300' but its elevation above nearby hills affords good views) and again enroute the Super Bowl (which we watched...

    Tom Jenks

I was surprised and saddened to learn of the passing of one of our VFTT members and frequent guest at gatherings and related social events. Will miss his good nature and humor not to mention the first cup of coffee at gatherings...

Thank you Tim and the moderators. I don't use Pay Pal but did charge a donation to my credit card and wonder if it went through.

    Are We a Dying Breed?

Count me as a lightweight boot fan, Vasque Sundowners for me. I still have two pair from the days they were made in Italy and each has been resoled at least once. Trouble is, as I've gotten older my feet have grown about a half size and over a long day the old boots aren't as comfortable. I...

    Wachusett Mountain Trail Network

I'd say the nearest significant peak to start building up to Washington would be Monadnock and it isn't too far beyond Wachusett.

    Eastern Puma declared Extinct

In a sad way it is a relief in that the mountain lion is a very dangerous animal higher than us on the food chain. Hiking in country they inhabit has always been a bit of an adrenaline rush whenever an unexpected sound or rustle occurs. They'll attack you from above ... a rock, a branch ...
