    drones

Silly me ... and I thought bushwhacking, peakbagging and redlining were ways to get away from the rat race, technology and all. But I do they they could be of tremendous assistance in SAR.

A question about an encounter with a bear

I've never carried bear spray in the east but it may be a more effective way of minimizing bear-human confrontations over the long run. Bears' sense of smell is their best asset and, if the spray will ward off grizzlies, it may well discourage black bears from human activity. As for coming...

Woodstock - Kinsman Ridge Forest Fire

I'd be less surprised if it were fireworks.

Discard Your Fleece and Synthetic Clothing Immediately

The title is very misleading and inflammatory and I was ready to skip the thread entirely. I have no intention of discarding my fleece and such an about face on a product so long promoted with environmental promise strains the credibility of all such progress. Too bad you didn't select a title...

    Wind Chill Guy Dies

So, an expert on wind chill retires to Florida. Is there a humidity heat factor waiting to be perfected?

The week after Labor Day week

Wages and rent; rent and wages. A vicious cycle but certainly one of temporary independence and indulgence which many of us have certainly enjoyed. But for the long term: buy, buy, buy. Consider the opportunity to create equity in your career and location choices as it is the best path to...

    Departing for Spain

Rub it in why don't you :D I understand the rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain so I guess you're in for good weather.

The week after Labor Day week

The difference between working and retirement is that when you work you schedule your recreation around work and long weekends extend your recreation; when you're retired you schedule work around your recreation so holidays are just another day on the calendar with more people sharing your...

    Wet & Slippery

I agree but as a compromise for the sake of maintaining balance and taking some load off my joints as I get older, I carry one and have gotten accustomed to it. My hiking boots seem to lose traction after so many miles ... I never added them up ... so when I feel that they're slipping I replace...

    Becoming A Professional Hiking Guide

I have a Maine Guide and Commercial Boat Operator license. The application focused on training and experience. In my case three things were particularly relevant: experience as a volunteer guide for a non-profit leading people with disabilities on hiking, backpacking and kayaking adventures...

Most Difficult Trail In The Northeast

I never did Mahoosuc Arm after the Notch but after coming down Mahoosuc Arm and going southbound through the Notch I thought,"Wow, am I glad I didn't do this in the other direction!" Otherwise, King Ravine was the one that wore me out the most, twice. Why, both times it took two doses of...

Chic Choc tent camping in Winter

Yep, I got it backwards and as for accuracy, I err on the "safe side", especially in converting kmph to mph for highway speed. I multiply the km or kmph by .7 to get my distance or speed as necessary. The difference I get by rounding up helps to account for my frequent wandering off trail.

    A Thread About Favorite Mountains!

Been pondering this since you posted it and the trite answer is that it is a tossup between my last peak (Ernest LaForce in Gaspesie Canadian NP) and the next one (Eagle Mtn. MN high point). Well, those aren't the most challenging nor dramatic of the peaks I favor so I wondered further, what...

Chic Choc tent camping in Winter

Never been to the Gaspe in winter but, depending on your passion, I'd highly recommend it any time of year. Maybe this link to Gaspesie National Parc will help: https://www.sepaq.com/pq/gas/. As you mention, language can be an obstacle but many of Sepaq's websites have a button for the English...

    Mt. Washington Trails

No matter the weather in the Valley, weather on Mt. Washington can be a crap-shoot. Those nice fluffy clouds you see from the valley; they can mean bitter, damp and risky weather at altitude. Therefore, to me the safest is the easiest and the Ammonusuc has the advantage of Lakes of the Clouds...

    Bigelow In Maine

Up Horns Pond, where there is a shelter, across the ridge (North Horn worth the short side trip) to West and Avery Peaks, down Firewardens Trail. There is a terrific campsite right after you cross the outlet from Stratton Brook Pond; it has a nice view of the pond. Another campsite further up...

Old trail near Algonquin Trail, Sandwich, N.H.

I've tried unsuccessfully to get a WMNF map showing old logging roads, fire roads etc. to help me answer this kind of question. I would think there'd be one for fire fighting purposes. Old topos are sometimes ... rarely? ... helpful. psmart seems to have the best answer and something...

    Blueberries in NH/Western Maine

I've got blueberry bushes in my yard but the birds get most of them ... which is ok with me. I have a good choice of fresh blueberries year round, some sources better than others, and they are a staple of my breakfast. Yes, the wild are generally better, and for my taste, smaller are better...
