Wrestling the Osceolas. January 16, 2011

I'm pretty sure Bob & Geri did that route one of the past two Winters.

    winter dog jacket?

Sheep uses a Cloud Chaser and it's an excellent product. I really like that it covers his belly so he doesn't get snowballs on his chest. He actually very seldom wears a coat when hiking (he's pretty damn furry) but when he does, I always go with the Cloud Chaser.

    Goals for 2011

I'm finding a lot less free time for hiking so I'll try to keep my goals realtively short for this year. 1. Complete at least 12 of my remaining 24 NH4k winter peaks. 2. Climb Mt. Hood this June. 3. Complete my redlining of the Pemi region. 4. Do at least one significant (90 mile) plus...

    Southern Presis..before the Storm 12/26

Great work. Sheep and I made an attempt at Pierce and Eisenhower on Christmas day but failed miserably at finding the Crawford Path between Pierce and Eisenhower. It sounds like it might have been a bit much to break trial on my own so it's probably best that I turned around at Pierce.

    New federal "Wild Lands" designation

The federal government is now designating "Wild Lands" in addition to "Wilderness Areas." I haven't read enough of this to claim to understand what it all means but this stuff is always a popular topic out here so I'm sure you'll all dissect and analyze it for me...

The Bridges of Gale River Road

Does anyone have an update on this? Are the footbeds really in place now? If not, what's the best way to tackle Garfield at this point in the season?

    Mount Hood guides

Sabrina, shhhh... I'm trying to keep this trip a secret. If Sheep knew of the climb he was missing out on, he'd be heartbroken!

    Mount Hood guides

Thanks again for all the advice. I'm definitely taking the 3 day climb that includes the training course. My technical climbing skills are zero and I'd be insane to do anything else.

    Mount Hood guides

Thanks for all the excellent advice! I was thinking of the instruction and summit but now I think I will go for the overnight version of the trip. Thanks for the heads up there!

    Mount Hood guides

I;'m going to be in Oregon in June next year and was thinking that I should give Mount Hood a shot. Does anyone have any recommendations or direct experience with any guides out there? Google points me to Timberline Mountain Guides. The website looks good but I'd rather go with a...

Is There A Cure for Pig Pen Smelling Boots?

I once bought some stuff at EMS or REI called "No More Stinky Feet." I sprayed it in my boots and the mildew smell went away almost immediately. I'm not sure if that's the same smell you are dealing with but I had great results.

Mt Pierce, The Long Way, Oct 30; 2010

Thanks Sabrina. Sheep is back and as strong as ever now. Since his recovery he's done Lafayette, Washington and Carrigain with no ill effects. We're ready for winter hiking now. I will take you up on the redlining offer next spring. We have a couple of epics planned!

Mt Pierce, The Long Way, Oct 30; 2010

Wow! That's an impressive hike. I love long hikes as well but haven't had any in so long. Sheep missed most of the summer due to a sprained knee so we had a slow year. I'm hoping we can get back into the redlining mode next spring.

    Winter Hiking Boots Recommendations

Veganism is a philosophy and lifestyle whose adherents seek to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.

    Winter Hiking Boots Recommendations

These look really interesting. About 4 years ago when I first got into winter hiking, I had the hardest time finding any non plastic winter boots that were vegan. There were a lot of interesting leather boots out there but very little that were synthetic and warm enough for winter in the Whites...

Isolation from the Dry River Wilderness 10/23/10

I don't remember a lot of detail about the Mt. Clinton Trail but I'm pretty sure it was clear sailing (except for some mud) all the way when I did it a year ago. I remember it being especially nice to descend that way after along rest at the hut.

Isolation from the Dry River Wilderness 10/23/10

@sabrina- The Dry River route to Eisenhower was wonderful. I don't think I saw a single person until I reached the summit of Eisenhower. It's such a nice change of pace from the usual crowds you see in the Southern Presis. I highly recommend that route. I did it last September. Here are some...

Isolation from the Dry River Wilderness 10/23/10

@kevin- have you explored the Carter Range from the Wild River side? That is such a treat. I'm sad that I likely won't get over there this year before snow makes that route inaccessible.

Isolation from the Dry River Wilderness 10/23/10

That looks like a great route! I've taken the Dry River Trail as part of a big loop over Eisenhower and Pierce but have never gone as far as you did. That's going to go on my "next year" list for sure. Thanks for sharing the adventure.

Mt. Carrigain via Signal Ridge - 2010.10.23

Trail and Mountain names should go in the thread TITLE Date of Hike: 2010.10.23 Trail Conditions: Down low the trails were wet in the usual spots with no ice. Crossings were relatively easy. Some stepping stones were slightly under water but it was no problems staying dry. Up in the switchback...
