Middlesex Fells - Big changes proposed by Mass DCR

Given the potential for a lot of really bad decisions, I'm impressed with the balance in the actual proposal. I had fear that they would give in only to the desires of FoF and make decisions that would limit access to both mountain bikers and dog owners. I've always found that hiking in the...

Mt. Jim (we think), Oct 17, 2010

I've never actually tried to find the path to Mt. Jim (it's good for me to suppress the peakbagger instincts at times) but I love the Asquam Ridge Trail. I've done it as a loop with the Gorge Brook and a traverse with the Benton and either way it's just a nice way to experience the area...

Black Angel Death March - 2009.09.27

Wow. That's an impressive hike when you add on Moriah! Great job. I do need to get back to this area while rt. 113 is still open. I love it there.

    VFTT Dog Hike October ??

Sheep and I are planning to come up but don't wait at the trailhead for us. If we happen to be late, we will catch up or see you on the summit!

    Favorite 4000-footers for snowshoeing

I found the Osseo to be an awesome trail on snowshoes. Other than the steep section over the ladders, it's a nice gradual pitch all the way to the top and coming down is a breeze... just the right grade to move quickly with little effort.

    VFTT Dog Hike October ??

I think Sheep and I are in for that day. I think we should do the Benton as it gets a lot less traffic and we'll probably disturb a lot fewer hikers with the dog mob! Plus it's a special trail for Sheep as it was the route on his first hike in the Whites 4 years ago.

    VFTT Dog Hike October ??

If you do this on a Saturday, I'm sure I could convince Sheep to attend. I think he's still carrying a little extra weight from all the treats he scored last year!

    Mt. Washington - 2010.09.18

After a summer of almost no hiking, I'm finally getting back on the trails. Sheep has had a leg injury for a good part of the summer so I have had to be patient and wait for him to be ready for the trails again. The end result is that I'm in about the worst hiking shape I've been for the past...

Washington, Monroe and Franklin with Alex and Sage, Sept. 9-11, 2010

Great trip report. I'm so glad you got some views on Saturday! I did Pierce and Eisenhower that day and was so tempted to include Monroe but didn't think I was up for the long walk out after that. Sage is one tough girl!

Mt. Carrigain via Signal Ridge on the Morning of 8/2/2010

That metal grate always freaks Sheep out too. On our first climb I managed to get him across it and to the top but now he refuses. He always goes bounding up the stairs and quickly turns around when he realizes what he is in for up there!

Mt Flume via Old & New Osseo Trails 6/19/2010

Great report. Thanks so much for sharing!

    Western Maine 4ks

I agree with this. I think the AT approach to Saddleback is a particularly nice approach. I wouldn't recommend missing out on that part of the hike unless you really had severe time constraints.

    Owl's head?

I thought about that as I was typing that statement. But I figure it will remain lightly traveled regardless. There are not many looking for a 16 mile route to Galehead like me!

    Owl's head?

I just hiked the Twin Brook a few weeks ago from 13 Falls to the hut. The bottom part of the trail had a good number of blowdowns, but nothing particularly difficult. There was one difficult to follow part of teh trail within a mile of 13 Falls but with a little care you'll have no problem...

    Proposed Mt. Greylock Resort

I'd personally hate to see more development around Mt. Greylock. I was very happy that after the summit road renovation was complete, they chose not to reopened the road to Sperry Campgroud. Making that a hike-in only space changes the character of that area in a good way. I'd hope that future...

    Hancock Overlook Parking?

I think it's wise to take Kevin's advice at any trailhead but I have had personal food experience at the Hancock parking area. I left my car there for a 3 day backpack last spring and had no problems at all.

    The Redline Chronicles - Episode I (May 23, 2010)

Thanks Petch. I agree with you on the trail network around Appalachia. Some day I want to go out and spend a day or two exploring without ever going above 3500 feet. I'm sure there is lots of cool exploring to do there! For this year, I picked the easiest section of the WMG to attack. It's...

    Hi-Cannon Trail 5/22/10

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Kevin! I don't always fully take in the whole post when I'm reading at work. That ladder was definitely the most difficult thing I had to get Sheep over. It sounds like Emma and Sheep took similar routes but I had about 50 pounds more dog to boost...

    Hi-Cannon Trail 5/22/10

How does Emma handle the ladder on Hi-Cannon? That was probably the toughest problem Sheep's ever had in the Whites. He managed to get halfway up without using the ladder and then got stuck moving from the rocks to the ladder and needed a lot of help from me to finish the climb.

    The Redline Chronicles - Episode I (May 23, 2010)

My biggest goal for this summer is to complete my redlining of all trails in The Franconia, Twin, and Willey Ranges (as described in the 28th edition of the WMG). So welcome to episode I of this journey. Episode I - 15.85 Miles and all I have to Show for it is Galehead? For my first...
