John, Thanks for the feedback on my trip reoport. I always hope that they are useful to someone. I have gathered so much good information from this board and it's great to be able to give back. I actually did Carter Dome via the Bog Brook, Rainbow Trails last summer. The Rainbow Trail is a...

Lonesome Lake with Sage, Sept 26-27

Trish, Please keep posting these trip reports. For me, these little trips are great reminders that it's ok to slow down and enjoy myself in the mountains rather than always pushing myself to the edge. Sage and Alex are such lucky kids for having been introduced to all of this at such a young age!

Black Angel Death March - 2009.09.27

Given the beautiful weather yesterday, it seemed like the perfect at add another hike to the "difficult approaches to easy peaks" series. This time I decided upon a big loop over the Carters from the Wild River Campground. Last year, I had done a similar hike covering Moriah and Shelburne Moriah...

Carters from Wild River - 2009.09.26

Date of Hike: 2009.09.26 Trail Conditions: Wild River Trail - No issues. It's a wide woods road for much of the 2.7 miles I hiked. Black Angel Trail - a few easy to bypass blowdows, otherwise good shape with little mud. Old Spider Bridge crossing is easy. Carter Moriah Trail - In great shape...

    moderate hikes in white mountains?

Mt. Moosilauke might be a good bet. Either the Benton Trail or Gorge Brook approach may meet your requirements. I tend to prefer the Benton side as it's a less traveled path and I love the longer summit approach above treeline from that side of the mountain. Gorge Brook is 7.4 miles with 2450...

    Moosilauke 9/9/09

Great trail report! Moosilauke was Sheep and my first real hike and is still our absolute favorite place to visit. I always love coming up from the Benton side as the approach to treeline seems much more stunning and dramatic and the leisurely walk to the summit never fails to leave me...

Winter Wonderland on Eisenhower - 2009.09.19

Trish, Actually in that first picture, Sheep was about to do his usual "lie down in the water and drink" thing, but as he started to lower himself, he realized that it was a cold morning and it may not be the best idea. I think at that point he was looking at me for guidance. Thankfully, on...

Winter Wonderland on Eisenhower - 2009.09.19

Yesterday I decided to embark on the latest of my "challenging ways to easy peaks" adventures, attacking Eisenhower and Pierce from The Dry River Trail. I had always been a bit wary of this trail as I wasn't sure how difficult the closed bridge crossing would be. Thankfully, The Feathered Hat...

Pierce and Eisenhower via Dry River - 2009.09.19

Date of Hike: 2009.09.19 Trail Conditions: Dry River Trail - In good shape. Mostly dry and the crossings were relatively easy rock hops. Mt. Eisenhower Trail - A few old blowdowns easily stepped over. Otherwise great shape. Crawford Path/Mt. Eisenhower Loop - No issues but lots of rime ice...

First snow of the 2009/2010 season!

There was a good amount of rime on the North side of Eisenhower today. With the wind and the nearly freezing conditions, it really felt like winter today. Fifty vertical feet below the summit on the Pierce side, it was like a different world- the sun was out and it was relatively warm. It was a...

Good route to kinsman pond with a dog

I've taken the Fishin' Jimmy up to the Kinsmans several times with my dog. It's a relatively easy trail for any dog who has hiking experience. The pinned steps were never a problem. Once you get on to the Kinsman Ridge Trail, the terrain is very dog friendly. I don't think your dog will run into...

Kanc roadwalk between PB and Sabbaday?

Road walks with dogs While I would prefer the road walk at the start of the hike, my dog has the opposite point of view. At the start of a hike, he is too anxious to hit the trail to endure an on-leash road walk. By the end of a long hike, he is generally pretty tired and can deal with being...

Finishing the 67 in Baxter - Day 1

Congratulations! Hi Stu. Congratulations on finishing the 67! You may remember Sheep and I from our Saddleback/Horn hike this summer. We both thoroughly enjoyed your company on that hike.

Sheep is a 4 year old Gioldendoodle. His daddy was a standard poodle and mom was a Golden Retriever. I wasn't expecting to get such a prefect hiking machine but he has been amazing. I had never hiked in the Whites before he came along and now it's hard to keep us out of the woods.

3 nights in the Whites, where to go?

Norcross Pond Thanks for the info on Norcross Pond. I just explored that area on my map and will definitely add that to my list of places to explore this fall. I'm finding the Whites even more fun now that I'm free from having a peak list hovering over my head.

3 nights in the Whites, where to go?

Both of una_dogger's suggestions are nice. I did an interesting variation on her first idea this spring. The hike up from Hancock Notch towards the Pemi is beautiful and you'll see barely a soul. I took the Ceder Brook Trail up to the Shoal Pond Trail and camped at the Ethan Pond campsite the...

Zealand and Hale on a beautiful day

Wanting to avoid the crowds on the holiday weekend, I decided the best bet would be to attack some viewless peaks by a unconventional route. I also have a secret goal to redline the Whites so this would also give me a few new trails. I started at the Zealand trailhead at about 9:20am. The trip...
