    Sad News

I only know him from his good advice via VFTT messaging and from potlucks years ago at Pat and Audrey's, but he definitely was very positive presence in this community for many years. He will be missed.

Peakbagger - In remembrance July 2024

So sorry. 20 years ago, he posted here to ask about sending me cards or letters when my survival was in question. He has been a positive presence here, on hikes, and VFTT related gatherings for a very long time. I hope there is some information about sending condolences or memorial donations...

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

I carry an old, never used, emergency stove (like the Esbit stove sold by REI) which weighs weighs about 3 ounces and a light weight aluminum mug. Kuvik has a titanium solid fuel stove at 1/2 ounce for 20 dollars: Kuvik Micro Titanium Solid Fuel Stove. Fuel pellets will add a few more...

    Fatality on Mt. Guyot

I had the same thought. Just - sad. I immediately recalled the discussion here on VFTT at that time, for example: https://www.vftt.org/threads/tragic-news-in-nh.1522/ Chris had a few recent articles in The Trek: White Mountain Direttissima - The Trek

Death, Judgement and Empathy on Franconia Ridge

Absolutely - empathy is essential, but so is preventing further tragedy. I felt for Emily and her mother from the moment I first saw the missing hiker notices and shared them. All of us make mistakes in our lifetime, very few of them have such tragic consequences or such broad exposure. The...

Hiker Rescue yesterday on Washington (Mt Clay)

I was scheduled to lead a Presi Traverse with AMC Boston H/B on the same day. We made the call to cancel Thursday night. I can still imagine myself up there in that weather feel quite badly for the hiker and his wife and family. How much fear both must have felt even before the loss...

Is the Franconia Notch Shuttle going to run in the Summer of 2022?

I'm finalizing an intermediate backpacking trip for the AMC's Spring Hiking Program and wondering about the shuttle and the parking situation for July, 2022. All the info I can find is either un-dated or obviously out of date. Any info would be much appreciated.

    POLL: Your longest day?

I do not remember the time (probably 20 hours or a little more). It was a "enhanced Pemi" a clockwise Pemi Loop from Lincoln Woods with side trips to Galehead, North Twin, Zealand and West Bond. I hiked it with alexmtn - who posts here. My knees were very angry at me for a stretch, though I...

How bad are Car Break Ins at Long Trail trailhead parking lots?

Does anyone have a sense of whether break ins are worse in VT than in the Whites. I'm thinking particularly of Journey's End, Hazen's Notch, Kelley Stand (aka Arlington Stratton) and Rt. 7 (for Lye Brook). Many Thanks!

Lye Brook Trail? - Current Conditions between Bourn and Stratton Pond?

Has anyone been through this section in the past year or so? A few years ago, I encountered flooding and the mother of all blow-downs hiking the Lye Brook Trail between Bourn and Stratton Ponds. This was due to a micro-burst in the area and beaver activity. The wilderness designation...

LOST Prescription Eye Glasses on Davis Path (between Resolution and Isolation)

Plastic framed - please let me know if you find them. They were lost the week before last, but I was hiking the Cohos and did not have a chance to post until now.

    missing hiker - Lancaster, NH

Years ago - a VFTT regular remarked that in evaluating a potential winter mountaineering partner, he was more interested in summits missed than summits accomplished. As a stubborn person who hates to see plans ruined, this has stayed with me. Without a willingness to accept and recognize...

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

Wapack One day it would be fun to try the bicycle spotting. Right now, I've got two trips planned and welcome anyone who wants to join. Neither hike will be particularly fast (I'm not very fast) - but I expect the southbound AMC hike in June to go about 12 hours, and the northbound hike in...

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

Let me know if you want to try it - it's a great way to burn off the cobwebs while it is still slushy and/or muddy at higher elevations to the North. I always leave a car with a cooler at about midway, as a bail out car and to lighten the carrying loads.

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

As follow up - I heard back from a representative of the Friends of the Wapack. They have not calculated cumulative elevation gain for the trail, but are now considering doing so. I've posted the trip as 4850 feet per the AMC guide, via Mohamed.

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

I'll take that as strong evidence that it's tough to generalize about subjective difficulty.

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

Thanks Mohammed. I have asked the friends of the Wapack, but no response to date. 4850 seems pretty reasonable for a northbound hike. I think that given the numerous relatively small gains, contour lines won't be as accurate as for some hikes (though I suppose there are maps with much better...

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

It's the nearly 50% difference between the lowest number and the highest that seems extreme. I suppose I could split the difference and say 5100 feet. For definitions, reliable would be if someone has done it a couple times and come up with the same number - or multiple GPS's on a trip give...

    Cumulative Elevation gain for Wapack

Does anyone have a figure for the elevation gain for a Wapack traverse (especially a reliable or authoritative one)? A Wapack traverse has been a rite of spring for me the past five years, but I've never gotten a handle on the elevation gain. Several times someone with me has tracked...
