North Twin from Little River Road via North Twin Trail

Date of Hike: 3/5/09 Trail Conditions: Fairly well packed out - Trail visible most of the way. Very strong wind gusts in exposed areas near the peak convinced us to skip North Twin and return. Light snow and drizzle at times. Snow on the trail was softening up by afternoon. Special...

    Twins question

A fellow hiker hopes to finish his 48 on North Twin and I plan to join him to try to get at least two of my Winter 48 this Saturday as this backpacker continues to drift into the world of peak bagging. While I loved doing the loop up the Fire Warden's trail to take in Hale, Zealand and the...

    Howker Ridge Trail this Winter

Thanks for those inputs. The trail was pretty well groomed when I hiked it this past July. There was actually a crew at work at the time. I think we only had to stop and think things through once, when an off-shoot to a stream crossing seemed wider than the actual trail.

    Howker Ridge Trail this Winter

Has anyone been up Howker Ridge Trail this winter? How recently might it be broken out? I've really enjoyed Howker Ridge in July and - and have been wanting to try it as a winter route. I noticed in searching VFTT that there is almost no reported winter traffic on the trail. I think I saw one...

    Summit forecasts

I think of the forecasts as representing a scenario with a range of uncertainty which I try to "guesstimate." Hopefully increased precision in the forecast in terms of location and elevation gives us a realistic way to reduce that range of uncertainty. Thus I might feel fine about 40 - 50...

    Summit forecasts

I've been using this, too. At first it looked like you could actually pinpoint the particular peak, so I was disapointed that it actually gave me the readings for some particular point within the pink quadrant. Happily the elevation reading is a fairly good clue and playing around with the...

'09 LT Hiker looking to interview LT hikers for MA thesis

I offered to relay his request: Greetings LT Hikers! I'm looking to interview people who have spent significant time on the Long Trail for my masters' thesis project. I'm looking for a full variety of interviewees: thru-hikers, section hikers, frequent hikers, annual hikers, GMC volunteers, LT...

    Criminal trespass vs. criminal threatening

Commuting the sentence to time served seems reasonable, it might have been good to do it a little sooner. It's also a great relief. In bouts of post-hike hypoglycemia, I've had nearly irresistible impulses to go knocking on certain doors to inquire about the free Ward Birds they are...

    Rare Moutain Rescue in Scotland

Thanks for those stories Raven. I found some brief video on the guy - apparently in the hospital. http://news.stv.tv/scotland/224559-climber-survives-1000ft-fall-down-mountain-and-is-found-standing-up-reading-his-map/

Opinions on Sunday hike to Kinsmans w Cold Snap

Absolutely - the question is always whether to keep going on from here, it is never whether we will reach destination X down the trail. We checked in at multiple times to discuss how far to go and I made sure people were aware of options at key points (the Hut, the trail to the Pond, the first...

Kinsmans via Lonesome Lake and Fishin Jimmy

1/23/11 The trails were broken out all the way to South Kinsman. Our group was torn between light traction (e.g. microspikes and snowshoes) much of the way- some bare booted without much difficulty to Lonesome Lake, more and more switched to snowshoes as we moved towards the ridge. Between...

    New YakTrax

I did see a few damaged versions of these at the clearance section of EMS. I looked at the various microspike competitors in December and ended up with the Hillsound Trail Crampons - so far so good. I seemed to have a somewhat easier time on ice than the people with microspikes - though that...

Opinions on Sunday hike to Kinsmans w Cold Snap

In the end, the weather was milder than predicted. The trail was pretty well broken out all the way to South Kinsman. Six solid and well prepared hikers joined me (down from 13 at the time I first posted) and a good time was had by all. I was really glad that Early Bird was one of those six...

Opinions on Sunday hike to Kinsmans w Cold Snap

Thanks Becca. I did call and talk to almost everyone individually (happily the two I didn't reach were people who I have hiked with in winter conditions before), got a better sense of each person and felt the ones who didn't decide to back out knew what they were in for and what they were...

Opinions on Sunday hike to Kinsmans w Cold Snap

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it (edit: this was written before I saw Arm's post - not that I don't appreciate it, too, but if does change the context). Lonesome Lake and the pond will be two good opportunities for people to reconsider. There should be enough people that some could...

Opinions on Sunday hike to Kinsmans w Cold Snap

A couple weeks ago, I agreed to cooperate in taking a group (from a meetup) to hike the Kinsmans via Lonesome Lake. My experience in winter hikes is moderate (dozens of winter ascents), some will be much more experienced, some less experienced. I've been watching the forecasts and the...

    Big Jay

Easy Herd path in Summer 2010 I took the trip from Jay to Big-Jay as a side trip while hiking the Long Trail this summer. If you are heading south towards Big Jay on the LT there is a pretty clear herd path leading to the right not long before you get to a major ski trail. It is really more...

    Nor'easter of No'easter?

C'mon Dave - that's still one "r" too many. It's Nawth-eestah or Naw-eestah. (As a local kid with a Texan mom who warshed her clothes, I was trained to pronounce all my Rs and took some ribbing for putting "rs" where they didn't belong)
