New England Trail -- towns advice needed

Askus - I think there two soggy stretches (definitely at least one) between table rock and Dixville Peak. The soggy turf was were fairly typical of the stuff I kept hitting - it was definitely far from the worst I hit. That might have been due to timing - or because everything was soaked...

Thanks for the kind words on Studs Terkel. I was about to change the quote to something from Leonard Cohen - but I you inspired to keep it around a while longer.

New England Trail -- towns advice needed

Time wasting? No way! Like maps, guides, gear info and all the other planning paraphenelia, the web forums are all part of the the trip planning and preparation - the function is not just to make the trip better, but to prolong and heighten the enjoyment. Trip planning and preparation ...

New England Trail -- towns advice needed

The trail is pretty easy to follow. Having the databook and the maps in hand will help and some sense of where the map is out of date. Since we were there, the road walk in the north has been reduced and it sounds like the new routing is clearly marked. There were times I had to and check out...

New England Trail -- towns advice needed

I'm sorry I missed saying hello. I was at the Festival and bought some raffle tickets at the GMC table and checked out the T-Shirts. I stopped in twice, once late morning and later around two o'clock. There wasn't all that much happening - not sure if the action picked up later in the day...

New England Trail -- towns advice needed

Just got back from Vermont. Drove there instead of walking, but the festival and the hiking were fun anyway. Its hard to separate the Cohos from the weather in my mind. Because of all the rain and the limited number of trail maintainers, the snow mobile trails it uses had incredibly high...

The Long Trail 07/07/09 to 07/26/09

Very nice report and pics! I also almost never use rain gear for summer backpacking and gave up carrying rain pants 10 years ago. It's so much nicer to get wet from rain than sweat. When I do use rain gear it tends to be for things like covering my backpack or food bag when setting up...

Guthook, I thought you might be interested in this http://www.netrail.org/ if you haven't seen it already. (BTW: I came off the trail after finishing the Cohos - I have some skin grafts on my feet that were not responding well to the wet conditions, so my improvised multi-trail hiking will...

    digital camera

I picked up a waterproof Fuji Finepix - which has decent specs and is waterproof (great for backpacking in wet weather) and discovered once on the trail that there was something I hadn't considered: there was a nice display/view screen on the back of the camera which was great in the store, but...

    Fourth Connecticut Lake

I enjoyed this hike a couple weeks back (July 23rd) as the appetizer for a hike of the Cohos. I agree that even with the heavy rains it is more of a pond - and that without them it could have been called a bog or a swamp. Still, it has a special feel to it. It's kind of nice to be traipsing...

Transport to/from Cohos trail Northern Terminus

I'm glad you got a ride and a friend willing to make the long drive. Since Wednesday will be a short day for me, I can't see making it to Panorama by Friday. If the next two days are your low mileage days, I might be able to catch up over that weekend. I'm still debating my resupply strategy -...

Transport to/from Cohos trail Northern Terminus

BCSkier - the trail might be a little less crowded. Looks like I'm set to start a day behind you. A kind soul I did some snowshoeing who does some trail work on the Cohos offered to give me a ride from the White Mountains.

    Long Trail info

I did the NPT a few years back and loved it. The NPT was wetter, flatter and - much to my surprise - had portions of trail which were much less well maintained than the Long Trail. The NPT had massive and rapidly spreading beaver activity and stretches where it seemed trail maintainers had...

Anyone use that "5 hour energy"

It's important to note that its not just caffeine - there are plenty other stimulants in 5 hour energy drink. One of them is taurine which is also in Red Bull and most other energy drinks. There has been some controversy about Taurine. There is even less info about some of the other stimulants...

    Long Trail info

I can't really add much to the great advice you've already had to your initial query. There is a useful table of shelter info at the GMC site vegematic linked to. The specific page is http://www.greenmountainclub.org/page.php?id=54

Cohos Trail maintenance - near Gadwah Notch

They now have a press release looking for a few more volunteers for this coming weekend: COLUMBIA, NH-- Itching to work atop a 3,000-footer in the shadow of a rustic lean-to in the most remote terrain in Columbia township? Cohos Trail Association officers Lainie Castine of Pittsburg, Bob...

Transport to/from Cohos trail Northern Terminus

Hillwalker and Veg - I've been thinking a bunch about what it would be like to be backing through this weather we've been having. I think three days in a row of lots of rain is the worst I've had. Anyway, I hope the weather improves for both of you.

    100 mile AT wilderness section

My son and I left my car at Monson and hitched back when we finished the trail. Rides were really easy to get most of the way. We did it that way because it seemed easier than driving to the north end, hiking south and then returning to the north end for the car. There were other people...

Transport to/from Cohos trail Northern Terminus

Guthook: Sportsman Lodge on the Cohos site was one of the places I contacted - I'll have to double check the others. I haven't tried to bargain or talk anyone down in price or negotiate a stay + shuttle deal, so I don't want to discourage you from trying.
