    Mt Tecumseh Elevation Article

For me personally, regardless of actual height, the Catskills will always have 35 peaks, the ADKs 46, and the Whites 48. I value tradition over precision, but would not have any issue with any club changing their list. Like Tecumseh, life is too short, ..... (haha!), and I'd prefer to keep...

Gorge Brook Trail - Mount Moosilauke

Hi Matt, Long time no see! I hope all is well. You've received great advice, so I don't have much to add except when Linda & I climbed it in July, we saw a moose and a calf! You will love the Whites;; it's our favorite hiking destination. :-) Rob

ADK New High Peaks Trail Map should be in every backpack leaving any trailhead!

MUCH better. For one, all the 46er peaks are named on the map (NatGeo missed a few ...). Second, all mileages are shown. Third, the bushwhack peaks (unmarked trails) are all shown on this map. Worth every penny. :)

Dix 9-18 Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant mt. 9-19 Porter and Cascade 9-20 Yesterday, 05:1

I had a lot of fun hiking (and partying) with Ralph, Linda, Nick, and Rae. The traverse from Rt 9 in New Russia to Chapel Pond is one of the nicest hikes in the northeast. A lot of elevation gain (5500 ft) but spread out nicely over the hike. Phenomenal views, and lots of them. This was one of...

ADK New High Peaks Trail Map should be in every backpack leaving any trailhead!

I agree with Black Spruce .... best map ever for the ADKs. I've found it invaluable in planning recent trips.

Woodhull, Van Wyck, Table, Peekamoose - 10/18/14

Fantastic day in the woods with Ralph Ryndak. 14+ miles, 9.9 miles of which were off-trail. This hike truly does have it all - - - old woods roads and foundations that were once part of the Stickle farm, 2 plane wrecks (one has a memorial plaque), bear holes, buck rubs, a rock amphitheater...

    Manitou Mountain & Anthony’s Nose – 6/21/14

My friend Bruce and I decided to hike something a bit more local this weekend. Since I haven’t climbed much in the Hudson Valley, Anthony’s Nose seemed like a good choice. This turned out to be a gem of a hike with lots of viewpoints along the ridge. There are 3 parking lots that one can...

    Armstrong & UWJ - 5/25/2014

Climbed Armstrong and Upper Wolfjaw in the Adirondacks last Sunday. Up the Beaver Meadow and down on Wedge Brook trail. Very little mud on Beaver Meadow, a bit more on the Range trail and Wedge Brook, but certainly not bad ... especially for mud season. Nice sunny day. Crowds weren't bad for...

5/3/14 Stoppel Point Second Plane Crash Site (Catkills)

That is awesome, Rivet! GREAT job!! Coincidentally, just last weekend, when I climbed West Stoppel and Stoppel Point, I met a couple of young guys from the town of Roundtop that had been looking (unsuccessfully) for that plane. I don't know their exact search location, but they mentioned...

    W. Stoppel & Stoppel Point – 04/27/14

The morning started mostly cloudy and a bit chilly, 37F at the parking area near Colgate Lake. The summits of all three Blackheads were in the clouds, and yet small pieces of blue skies could be seen here and there. I had driven to the last PA on the left, near the big field. Based on the...

    BLM & Graham - 01/13/14

Very true Mike. I'm sure most of us have hiked plenty of peaks in non-winter months that were in winter conditions. I attempted to climb Armstrong last May after the Memorial Day weekend snowfall. Spring-like conditions down low, ..... but several feet of snow up high. Came within a few...

    BLM & Graham - 01/13/14

Finally uploaded the PHOTOS I've got plenty of personal & vacation time Alan. Looking forward to hiking more of the CHH this spring with you and Toby. The 200's are great too .... just let me know.

    BLM & Graham - 01/13/14

Decided to take a personal day from work and go for a hike. Climbed Balsam Lake and Graham Mountains in the Catskills. The temperature was 28F when I began the hike at 9am, but warmed up throughout the day to 42F by the time I arrived back at the car. Way too warm for January, and I hesitate...

    Exercise better than medicine ?

I agree Brian. Exercise won't cure cancer. It won't cure infections. It won't cure autoimmune diseases. But that said, there can be no mistaking the positive affects of exercise either. Sadly, despite the soaring rates of childhood obesity, prescription drug addiction, and the incessant...

    Halcott

There was a canister there recently .... unless the canister gremlins are back. When are you thinking about heading up? Rumor has it there may be a few of us climbing Halcott, Hawkitt, Eff-it ,,, whatever you call it, ,,,, and a few other peaks this weekend. Winter is almost here!!! :-)

Barkaboom & Cradle Rock Ridge 10/19/13

Climbed 2 more Catskill Hundred Highest. Although many of these peaks are not renowned for having the best viewpoints, I am enjoying these gems immensely. On the drive down Beaverkill Road, the outside temp gauge dropped from 35F to 33F, and frost covered the grass and fields along the way...

    GPS questions

My (somewhat limited) experience - - - Etrex Legend (Owned for 3 or 4 years) = loses signal frequently. Large gaps in tracklog. Difficulty in acquiring satellites under heavy canopy. Nearly impossible to acquire satellites under wet, heavy canopy (i.e. during or after rain). 60CSx (owned...
