Poconos / Delaware Water Gap info needed

Actually, the area you are referring to, around Crater Lake, was developed. These were 3 and 4 season homes, 27 or 28 in total. During the planning of Tocks Island Dam (and the subsequent flooding, the homes were mostly bought by the Federal government, and the remaining were taken by eminent...

Little Rocky, Mombaccus, and AHP - 5/18/13

On Saturday, I had the privilege to hike with Hermit. It had been several years since I had seen Ralph, and it was a pleasure to walk through the woods with someone as knowledgeable as he. We climbed Little Rocky 1 and Little Rocky 2 as Ralph calls them, both bumps of this hundred highest...

    Bellayre & Winnisook - 05-04-13

With yet another nice forecast for the weekend, I wanted to get up to the Cats to climb a couple more hundred highest. Since one buddy is temporarily side-lined with an injury, and the other had some family matters to attend to, I decided to go solo. First stop was Bellayre. Back in December, I...

    Wildcats in the Catskills

Sounds great! Saturday works better, but Sunday might be doable if that works better for you and Tony. Alan mentioned that he cannot make it, but we'll see.

    Wildcats in the Catskills

I'll email Tony & Alan and see if they are available. I can do this Saturday, but not Sunday. Next weekend is even better, but yeah, ..... the weather this Saturday is looking GREAT!

    Wildcats in the Catskills

We actually saw one cutting, directly in the center of the ridge, before the hemlock forest. But it looked old, at least several years or more, kinda hard to tell. And it was in the middle of "no where". When I say "no where", we were basically taking the path of least resistance, no herd...

    Wildcats in the Catskills

Hi Ralph, Surprisingly, the route was free from any signs of man, .... no herdpaths, no cuttings, and no flagging, save one small piece of pink ribbon on a tree on the West Wildcat summit bump which Tony promptly removed. It felt very wild in there, ..... just the way it should be! Looking...

    Sterling Forest - 4-6-13

The weather was forecast to be perfect, so even though I had other plans, I had to change them. Glad I did ….. the forecast proved 100% accurate! Temps were about 40F when I started the 8+ mile loop, and warmed up to the mid-50s throughout the day. Skies were very clear, and deep blue; a good...

Giant Ledge & Panther on St Patty's Day - 03-17-13

Thanks guys. I've learned from the best. And have been inspired by folks like yourself, Alan, Jay, Steve & Fran, Rockysummit, Ralph & Maddy, Mudhook, the Rankins, Spence & Brian, and far too many others to name. Truth be told, part of me doesn't want to finish. I will miss having a "final...

Giant Ledge & Panther on St Patty's Day - 03-17-13

What a day to be in the mountains! Bluebird skies, a couple of inches of fresh powder, and only a bit of winds up high. The day started off with low clouds and snow showers as I entered the Catskill Park on my 2.5 hour drive up. But by the time I geared up in the parking area, signed the...

    Views from the Carribean?

I think you are going to be disappointed with El Yunque. We were. It's a nice hike, ...... but. I didn't mean to burst your bubble ...... enjoy your trip. If you ever want to go to St. Maarten, let me know. I own a condo there. Beautiful beaches, great food & drink nearby, and very nice...

Exercise helps increase flu vaccine effectiveness

Same here. Wait, actually, that's not true. The last time I was sick, with the flu, was SuperBowl Sunday in 1995. Had a 104.7F fever. Was hallucinating. I don't get sick often, but when I do, I come close to death.

    Blackhead - 01-12-2013

As the darkness gave way to a dull, gray, dreary day during the 2.5 hour drive up from north-western NJ, I just assumed that I'd be either hiking in the fog all day, or have no views whatsoever. Wrong! Making my way up 23A, the sun got brighter and brighter, and then suddenly the skies were blue...

Willowemoc & Sand Pond Mt. (Catskills) - 07/21/2012

07/21/2012 I've only hiked in this area once before, climbing Millbrook and Woodpecker Ridge with friends several years ago. This was my first time walking solo in this area, and it was very enjoyable. Saw plenty of wildlife, and only one other couple. No other cars in the parking area. Trails...

    GPS or Map & Compass?

Using map and compass is fun. Terrain association is even more fun. While hiking, I like to use my GPS for making a cool tracklog. Then later on, while enjoying a cold one, I like to see the cool tracklog overlayed on Google Earth. Then I can see where I had fun. To each their own.
