Fall colors and seasonal change thread

All 4 photos were exposed using a tripod. The tripod is something which I have increasingly viewed as a necessity on most hikes as it greatly extends one's ability to obtain good photos in a wide range of lighting conditions. For waterfalls it is perhaps most essential. The exposures of the...

Fall colors and seasonal change thread

I have not had time to sort through my Catskill photos yet from earlier in the month. Here are a few more recent photos from the Hudson Valley of New York which is just now reaching peak foliage. A cliff side hanging garden in the Peterskill rock climbing area of Minnewaska State Park on the...

    It's heerrre . . . maybe

About 0.5 inch of wet slushy snow on the Shawangunk Ridge, NY I was hiking on the Shawangunk Ridge (about 80 miles northwest of New York City) Thursday afternoon on a photo hike when the wet snow began to fall. It accumulated about 0.5 inch which made the top of the cliffs and trails a bit...

The Thoreau 14 - another new List

Indeed, it is a pancake with pimples. We may now have a site that was greatly altered and unnaturally leveled at the time the Hotel Kaaterskill was constructed in 1881. In addition to the Hotel, a vast area of the mountain was cleared of all vegetation for an extensive lawn. All of this...

Fall colors and seasonal change thread

Great image. Very nicely captured. Those swirls are wonderful. What stream is it? Something near the Shepaug maybe? The stream and cascades remind me very much of the Peterskill in the Shawangunks. That is perhaps appropriate as the Gunks are made of cast off Taconic sand.

PBS National Parks starts tonight 9/27

There had been an earlier short thread here. However, this is a more appropriate forum location. As it was raining much of the afternoon today here in the Hudson Valley, I caught the first episode this afternoon on WNET out of metro New York City. After a general overview and history the...

New York Time article on the Devil's Path in the Catskills

A good article (published Sept 25, 2009) on the Devil's Path can be viewed online with a photo slide show 2 Days, 3 Nights, on a Path Named for a Devil. At the end of the second online page are links to a couple of websites maintained by members of VFTT: adkhighpeaks.com maintained by mavs00...

    Shhhhhh... I'm not telling...

Yes, they are all amazing, but for me there is one easy pick for a favorite. I believe the following image is stunning. It could be a Winslow Homer seascape, one of his more rare calm scenes. I could easily imagine it hanging on a museum wall. Excellent work.

First snow of the 2009/2010 season!

Now come on guys. The "real" snow will be here soon enough.:D:rolleyes: No need to rush the seasons. We are just finishing up the second best time of the year for hiking: late summer. And we are just about to start the best hiking season: fall foliage. Hiking is still simple and easy. Day...

All 46 peaks and NO Rain?

I reached all 46 summits on my first round of the 46 without ever receiving even one drop of rain. I live a 3-4 hour drive away from the Adirondack High Peaks, so I only made the journey when I was certain the weather would be good. And for the most part the plan worked and I had many sunny...

    Catskills: Route 23A Closure Sept 12, 1-4pm

If you are traveling into the Catskills on Saturday, September 12 from the east; you should be aware that NY Route 23A will be closed from Palenville to Tannersville between 1 and 4:30 pm for a Volunteer Fireman's parade. A short notice was in the Kingston Daily Freeman. Temporary highway...

    Hawthorne Falls Success - 09/02/09

No, that is not cheating as it is indeed what the eye beholds. Thanks for the explanation. And you still deserve that green square for the amazing sunny day waterfall photo that I gave you before you revealed the "trickery". The photo is deserving of a green square with or without the...

    Hibernation weekend!!!!!

I also avoid the high peaks on holiday weekends. Too much traffic on both highways and trails. I prefer to hang close to home. I will work holiday weekends whenever I have the opportunity in exchange for days off later. If not working I will hike in a few local, generally unknown, and "off...

    DC Critiques Please :)

I agree with Chip. I like the second image better. The foreground and cyclists add depth and interest. Also the off center monument is a better composition. Perhaps you could crop a bit off the left so that the cyclists would also be off center, and more cycling "into" the photo. In such a...

    New Canon 7D?

Well, I am similarly biased and I would say that Canon killed off Nikon years ago. But Nikons are still awfully good. And of course you really can't go wrong with any of the dSLRs currently on the market, especially the full frame ones. It is all about one's current investment in glass. O...

    I hiked with an umbrella...proudly

I wholeheartedly approve of umbrellas. Better to hike with an umbrella and keep your photographic equipment dry than to spend the day at home. I also seek out destinations with old roads, carriageways, and meadows with wide paths on such days. I even proudly hike with bright white and cream...

a couple of macro pics to critique

I like the wider swaths of color. They provide more context and a sense of place to the photo. I also like John's crop into a landscape format. Although including the deck surface gives additional context, I believe we see enough that it is a human created environment without the surface...

a couple of macro pics to critique

The shadow doesn't bother me too much, but yes it might be better without the shadow. Just like a true hiker or climber. Never satisfied with just one view. Always seeking a better one. Looking for a better or warmer place in the sun. This frog has found the meaning of life.

a couple of macro pics to critique

I also believe that the first photo is the most successful of the three because of what appears to be an inquisitive expression on the frog's face -- as if contemplating the meaning of life. Who knows what is really in the mind of a frog beyond the next cricket, but it is always fun to...

    Foliage In October

Moonrock, I agree with your own assessment that the high elevations of the Adirondack high peaks will be past peak. But if you hike from the AMR Preserve you will optimize your opportunities for some good foliage at the lower elevations of the south slopes of UWJ and Armstrong. edit: One...
