Hikers Discover The Shocking Truth About November In The Mountains

Could be. I was trying to avoid speculating too much. Since the story says that they intended to stay overnight, that would seem an obvious piece of gear. I see why day-hikers frequently omit/forget lights, but if you're planning to stay overnight when the sun goes down at 4PM, how could lights...

Hikers Discover The Shocking Truth About November In The Mountains

Has anyone found a report that indicates why a conservation officer needed to walk in and bring them out? I've been cold bunches of times, and my usual response is "F this, I'm going home", which since it usually involves walking down the same trail I just walked up, isn't something I need...

Help with Trail Maps for GPS

Agreed. Though the "digitized off a map" trails vs. the "trackfile from a GPS" are usually easy to recognize when you display them. The "digitized" ones are too smooth, and line up with the lines on the underlying topos too well.

Help with Trail Maps for GPS

As far as I know, you CANNOT buy GPS maps with decent hiking trail information for the WNNF. In fact, my experience w/DeLorme is that the 'paid' maps are vastly inferior to the pre-loaded maps. USGS topos are way out-of-date, and in many cases, only ever displayed "wishful thinking" for trail...

Will You Buy a NH HikeSafe Card?

There are no permits (or waivers) required for groups to use the WMNF, unless you are collecting a tuition or fee for services, since this is considered commercial activity.

Will You Buy a NH HikeSafe Card?

The card is per-person, and not transferrable, not per-group. Otherwise there would be no point behind the $35 'family' version.

Will You Buy a NH HikeSafe Card?

I find the lack of any provision for youth groups to be particularly irksome. We operate on slim (i.e., non-existent) budgets that make NHF&G look rich. But technically, if I took a group of 10 Boy Scouts hiking, I'd only be covered if I ponied up $250 for the weekend. Sure, if the *same* 10...

NH hike safe cards available starting January 1st

So, for everyone who chimes in and says "I'll just buy a fishing license instead", that'll run you $56 for out-of-state vs $25 for the hiker card. Of course, you do get to fish, so you get something out of it, if you actually like to fish. Under the new system, "not negligent" is (and always...

    Cleaning Up

Hmmm. I think the coin-op showers at the Highland Center are actually in the Depot building, and I'm not sure they're open in the winter. I think I remember seeing a sign in the Shapleigh Bunkhouse stating that the showers in that building were for paying guests only. But I could be...

MSR model of the year - No more Evo or Pros

Yeah, I might have to see if my company will send me for some training at HQ so I can go deliver a dopeslap down the block at Cascade Designs. The engineer in me sees lots of annoying stress points in this new rendition that weren't in the old hard deck Classics/Denali/Evo

Place to Stay That r Open in Winter+ Early BRKFST

There's also this place in Gorham, which I noticed as I drove through a couple of weeks ago. It's on the east side of Gorham, so is a little farther away. http://libbyhouseinn.webs.com/aboutus.htm

    Low bucks winter goggles

I guess the key is to search for 'safety goggles' not 'ski goggles'. Here's an example OTG version for $17. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003U9VE94 There are various tint options. I'm less worried about that, since my specs are sunglasses. Antifog is important.

Unnamed 2614' North of Mt Pemigewasset?

Made the mistake of looking at some maps, and realized that the lookout/summit called "Mt Pemigewasset" or "Indian Head" (2557') isn't actually even the high point on that particular lump of rock. There's an unnamed 2614' lump about a mile north (east of Mud Pond). Anybody know if it has a...

    Low bucks winter goggles

These look nice, but for your next trick, find me some of these in an OTG (over-the-glasses) configuration. They don't look wide enough to accommodate a pair of specs. But maybe saving money on goggles could finance the Lasik....

    Trails with Ladders

There's a ladder on The Horn? (Pilot Range/Kilkenny Ridge Trail?), or are there 2 mountains known as The Horn? Though that would explain why it was such a PITA to get onto the summit if I missed a ladder....

    Bike Path At Skoocumchuk Trailhead

As long as you are traveling to the normal trailhead that is car-accessible, it is a non-issue. Now, if you rode the bike, say, past the Basin parking area to the start of the Liberty Springs or Flume Slide Trails, that would be an issue, because that is not the "normal" car-accessible...

Common Loon, 3 Toed Woodpecker, others endangered in the lower 48

Oh pretty. I didn't realize we had any Loons in Sugar Hill. Guess I never thought about it. This loon and this one, and these four all seemed to be doing OK last month on Scraggly Lake in Maine.
