    Overnight at Flat Mountain Pond...

In the middle of winter, I normally think nothing of getting up before 5AM to get to a location by the post 7AM sunrises. Summer is much different. Sunrises are now only a bit after 5AM, with good light starting during the 4AM hour. A two to three hour driving or hiking window equates to a...

Many of the meadow flowers are starting to bloom in SoNH...including daisies, trefoil, and LUPINES! I also found some blue-eyed grass the other day... Won't be long now before we get fields of daisies, fields of lupines, and fields of irises! Can't wait. Also...now is the time to begin...

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

I've been away from New England for a bit, and am amazed at how fast spring has come in to southern NH and Maine. Yesterday, I went and found some Fringed Polygala in Bedford, NH on the way to the Ponemah bog. Also in bloom yesterday were lady slippers, bluets, a few lingering oats and plenty...

    Middle Hope; No-Hope; Hope-less . . . Whatever! (20-Apr-2010)

Thanks john! And while I do love the shots...I prefer that thread to be about chronology of sitings and location than artistry. Its a great resource to go back through them through the years. Please post often..even if you don't have pics, especially for new blooms and passings!

Nice shots so far this year. Things have been VERY early. For example...I stopped by Adams Point on Saturday, and found the Hepatica there in full bloom. The shot that I have of it was taken there on May 5th in 2006. That's a huge swing. Grouseking...I believe you have some sort of Phlox...

Kevin and I just trekked around Pawtuckaway and the Lamprey River Watershed in the rain. We found some arbutus, and a nice patch of bloodroot in bloom! I also saw spring beauty on the banks of the Lamprey yesterday.

Tongue Mountain Range - 4/3/10 (Adirondacks)

I love that range, and it sounds like you had a nice experience with it. It's just a nice isolated feeling there, surrounded by the beauty, but commotion of lake george. April does sound like a nice time...out of season. One thing that came to mind when hearing about the frog...them rattlers...

Do you hike in the dark?

Most of my hikes either start or finish in the dark. I have really grown to enjoy the experience of taking in a sunrise or sunset from the mountains...and the only way to do that is to hike at night. That being said...I less enjoy hiking at night ALONE...but that's a whole nother can of worms...

Colt's foot is very common, shouldn't be too hard. I found some early last year in the wet areas on the side of the road between N.C and the entrance to hurricane mountain road. Hepatica...that's a bit tougher...not common as far as location, but abundant where it grows. I've had poor luck...

Temperature Could hit 90F in NH

Washington set two record highs in a row...but it's the margin that's truly impressive. Yesterday's record high of 56 replaced a record high of 42! That's crushing a record by 14 degrees! http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/f6/2010/04.pdf
