The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

Pawtuckaway is awake! Kevin and I hiked through Pawtuckaway this morning. Lots of hepatica is now in bloom, but little else. Found some trillium still in the stalk phase. No bloodroot or anything else in bloom. Found one big Blanding's turtle. Here's the hepatica:

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

Flowers have been coming out in my area a little over a week earlier than last year, and people in southern areas should be on the lookout for Colt's foot, hepatica and early violets after the next warm spell, whenever that may be... The past few years, these threads have been incredibly...

    On 'The Trail' to Pierce...

With the weather looking next to perfect yesterday, a buddy and I decided to head up to Pierce to take in a sunset. An alpenglow shot of the classic view has been in my mind for a while, and I was hoping that with a touch of fresh snow, clear skies and a well coated Washington, this would be...

Where to? Overnight hike with students in Vermont...

I've been the leader of the high school outing club in the school I teach at for a few years now, and we've managed three overnight hikes a year during my tenure. As I know the shelters and trails in the Whites well, that's where we've always gone. This year the kids want to go to...

Still Plenty of Snow up in Northern NH

Great info...and a great reminder... April was just about the worst time for unprepared hikers when I was working at MWO...nice weather down low/south drew people up on the 'lets climb a mountain' whim only to become overwhelmed by the conditions. Be careful...and enjoy it!

    Sunrise on Wildcat...

There have been two things that I’ve long wanted to do, and have consistently been put on the back seat for one reason or another the past few years. One is catch sunrise from Wildcat as the alpenglow hits the eastern slopes of Mount Washington. The other is to learn to telemark ski, to ease the...

Three Nights in Baxter State Park, 2/4-2/7

Looks like a fantastic trip, and great pics as well. I definately found this post helpful, as I'd like to plan a trip there next year and detailed photo reports are exactly what I need to get a sense of place! This was excellent!

    Break-in Alert... **

Spent a lot of time on the phone with an enforcement officer with the forest service today. He was very motivated to gather information, visit the scene and start tracking this down. He said it hasn't been going on much this year, and he doesn't want to see it start up again! That was one...

Carter Notch Trip With HS Outing Club...

Many of my trips to the White Mountains are made purely for the enjoyment of the mountains, and the hope of sharing that enjoyment on film. Leading the Outing Club at the high school that I teach at on trips adds an extra dimension to that sharing. Students get to experience the outdoors, gain...

    Break-in Alert... **

Thanks...I thought I was diligent as well, but well, here we are. Just want to put people on extra alert! We did make the trip over to the state police barracks in Twin Mountain. They were very nice, helpful, and realistic...

    Break-in Alert... **

Just a note that my car, and a friends car were smashed across the street from nineteen mile brook last night. From what I've heard from the state police, and a forest service employee...it's not been very common at all this winter...so just lucky I guess. Wierd what was taken...from my car...
